Santorum’s views on the Earth is questionable (as is Chris Matthews' grammar)
MSNBC ^ | Thu Feb 23, 2012 | Chris Matthews

Posted on 02/24/2012 4:28:06 PM PST by presidio9

The other day Rick Santorum attacked President Obama for having a "phony theology," an apparent reference to the President's belief that man should do what he can, whatever he can, to protect this earth on which we all live, the earth that is, not counting the Newt Gingrich plan for lunar colonization, the only place we, our children, their children and forever into the future have to live.

Santorum called this concern for a healthy planet as being a religion that puts the earth "above man." I suppose he's talking about the concern scientists and most thinking people have with climate change and what we are doing to affect it. Anyway, it's all "phony," he says, this serious concern about what we're doing to the earth, all part of a "phony theology."

So I wonder who else believes in this "phony theology" Santorum derides from his electoral pulpit.

Here's someone I came across who believes in climate change and what we need to do about it. It's someone addressing diplomats just last month.

"Environmental protection and the connection between fighting poverty and fighting climate change are important areas for the promotion of integral human development. For this reason, I hope that, pursuant to the seventeenth session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change recently concluded in Durban, the international community will prepare for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development as an authentic "family of nations" and thus with a great sense of solidarity and toward present and future generations."

Who is this figure summoning the nations of the world to band together as a "family" to work on the problem of global climate change? Who is this person dabbling in what Rick Santorum calls "phony theology?

It's Pope Benedict XVI,

When the Pope speaks of climate change and global warming,,,he is being a well meaning moron.
But im pretty sure,, he does not carry his “infallibity” to such an issue.
If the Pope says a Yugo is better than a Toyota,, he’s just speaking as a guy. So im pretty sure the faithful can roll their eyes and shake their heads when he speaks out on things like this.

Catholic opinions?

Catholic opinions?

If you are not Catholic, and have a disagreement with the Pope, try picking a more diplomatic term than "moron."

This thread was posted as an example of how liberals like to misrepresent the Pope's opinions to twist them into solidarity with their own ridiculous causes. In the quote Matthews provided, it is important to note that the Pope did not refer to causation of climate change, instead speaking about eviornmental protection and fighting poverty. Both of these are ideals to ALL Christians. Perhaps you were looking for a reason to disagree with the Pope?

For future referrence, the Pope never speaks infallibly on issues that might effect you, your life, or your beliefs. Therefore, you would be best to get the entire idea out of your head. You don't seem to know what to make of it. Papal infallability referrs only to religious beliefs, not policy opinions.

What is an “im”?

The pope is a “moron”?

Go back to snake twisting since you’re obviously anti-Catholic.

His first sentence is 68 words. When I was in grad school taking communications classes, we had to write and rewrite until we got to 20 words per sentence. (Or thereabouts for anyone counting.)

“Environmental protection and the connection between fighting poverty ****and fighting climate change**** are important areas”

Yes,, the Pope DID say that fighting climate change is important. Ergo,, on that topic, he was a moron. I assume that a man of his position cannot claim ignorance of the facts of the global warming scam. So with good data,, he makes a claim worthy of a moron, or a despot.

As for being looking for a reason to disagree with him, i clearly stated that he carries his infallability in some areas, not in others, and asked catholics for opinions as to their opinion in this case as to which this might be.

Grow up. Not everything is an attack. But i will happily and enthusiastically call ANYONE a moron who says that “fighting climate change” is critical, a Christian duty, or a moral imperative. Just as i would someone who said we should prepare for the return of planet-X, the 2012 thing, etc,,,.
With his position comes great responsibility not to take such a wrong-headed position, even in matters that lie outside his zone of infallible matters.

And thats exactly what i was asking opinions on. When he said that,,, do roman catholics it considered a matter of Theology, or no? IE,, is fighting climate change considered a theological position, one of say, stewardship,, bringing it under the umbrella of his infallability?

Or is he just speaking as an individual?

And i do indeed hold someone to a higher standard when they are literally surrounded by scores of the best researchers and scholars on earth. And Santorum is right on this one,,, no matter what Matthews says.

im is the term “I’m” while having an informal on line conversation, in a language that does not have any ultimate rules. There is no “Académie Française” in English. In fact,,English is one of the only languages that is so arranged. It is why it is taking over the planet.

Is seems you are implying that being unconcerned with minute details of grammar in an informal setting, is about the same as missing the biggest scam in the history of the earth despite having unlimited scientific and political advice?

Twist your own snake.

People who rationalize their linguistically error filled posts as “having an informal on line conversation” are lazy.

If you want to post an opinion, get up off your fat *** and take the time to use proper spelling and grammar. No one is impressed by the arguments of some schlub tagging railroad cars.

The Pope is not a moron.

You are.

The Pope's infallibility only extends to moral issues where ex cathedra is specifically invoked. Global warming statements and a host of views and doctrine do not fall under that category.

But if you weren't a moron, you'd know this.

Wrong. The person I was responding to made it quite clear that he rejects the Catholic Faith.

The Pope is just a man.. and can be WRONG...

A billion Catholics and one current Pope agree with statement.

I'm not sure what your point is, unless it was a clumsy attempt at picking a fight.

True Popeistry crawls my nape.. even the Popenoids of the protestants..

You need to check your attitude dude. All that anger isn't healthy. Try re-reading the quote. And then doing some research. The Pope spoke about "climate change," not "global warming." Climate Change, of one variety or another is a scientific fact. It started when the planet solidified, and it will continue until the sun finally ungulfs us. "Man made global warming," on the other hand, is an uproven scientific theory that is based in part on climate change.

For the record, the Vatican has not signed the Kyoto treaty, and takes no official position on the cause of climate change. It merely reasserts the position that man has been given stewardship of this planet and is therefore responsible for enviornmental protection. Liberal publications that normally do everything they can to discredit the Church have attempted twist the Pope's statements to support their own political position. You need to be very clear about this: If the Pope thought it was a Christian obligation to fight global warming, he would say EXACTLY that. He didn't. Listen to some of what he has had to say as Pope for his predecessor about abortion. No ambiguity there. Popes choose every word that comes out of their mouths very carefully.

You are letting NYT, Chris Matthews, and global warming cronies everywhere mess with your head. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I believe you've made your opinion on that subject quite clear over the years, though I'm not exactly sure what "Popeistry" is. Is it something Jesus was guilty of when he called Peter?

Catholic leaders are suckers for feel good left wing ideology. Not to mention, the church got burned by the whole Galileo thing.

I hope the American church leaders learned their lesson with the Kenyan’s gambit to demonize them.

[ Is it something Jesus was guilty of when he called Peter? ]

Surely you mean nicknamed him Petros?... his name was Simon..
Some think Jesus was making metaphorical reference to something “else”..
You know like he(jesus) did with most other things.. i.e. use metaphors..
Some call them parables but they are metaphors just the same..

His(jesus) disciples whined, “Why must you always use metaphors?”...
The answer was significant.. that many still miss..
