BOX OFFICE: ‘Act Of Valor’ #1 With $24.7M Weekend, ‘Good Deeds’ $16M, ‘Wanderlust’ And ‘Gone’ Bomb
Deadline Hollywood ^ | February 26,2012 | NIKKI FINKE

Relativity’s R-rated Act Of Valor has stayed No. 1 all weekend. It’s the the Bandito Brothers’ independently financed low-budget U.S. Navy fighting force tale using actual SEALs from an original screenplay by Kurt Johnstad (300). (FYI, there was a novelization of that script, “Tom Clancy Presents Act of Valor”, written by Dick Couch and George Galdorsi and released in paperback by Clancy’s publisher. Relativity acquired the rights to the project last June for $13 million and a $30 million in prints and advertising commitment - the biggest money paid for a finished film with an unknown cast at that time.

Excellent! Act of Valor deserves every penny it earned! I just saw the Artist with my wife. Great flix. We saw Good deeds too and Wanderlust. We were bored this weekend. All four have their moments. Anyway now if the Artist beats the Help tonight no big deal. Both deserve the Oscar!

$43 million total film cost. This movie will be a big profit maker. Glad to see movies like this going well.

I saw the first showing on the first day and loved it. I did prefer Blackhawk Down, but this is certainly a movie freeps should see.

They shot almost all of it using the Canon 5D Mark II, and the Canon 7D —MANY ordinary people walking around own these cameras.

Going forward the cost of movie-making is going to dive for the deck.

Way to go, America, for supporting and appreciating this film.

Here's a grudgingly positive article from Box Office Mojo, about the appeal of Act of Valor.

Can anyone explain to me how the movie took in $9.1 mil on Friday and end up with only $24.7 mil for the 3 days. And how do they know at 2:00PM on Sunday what the total take is, I’m just asking?

As I heard in the past (When top movies had similar numbers) they know how to project Sunday Box Office and then final numbers come out Monday or Tuesday.

This movie's success has got to be killing the liberals.

I would imagine a plethora of Ebert imitators will unload their venom on this movie.

Saw it at noon today. Excellent film, well produced and worth seeing again. I’ll definately buy this one when it comes out on DVD (to put with my other keepers: Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, Braveheart...all good...)

That “Gone” looks awful even from the ads. That gal looks like she couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag.

Just saw the movie and it was fantastic.

As to your question, eartrumpet, I think I understand where you are coming from but I think (and I could be wrong) that you are being unnecessarily cynical. My guess is that no self-respecting SEAL team member is expecting any monetary reward from this movie, but probably appreciates the higher regard that the average person may hold for team members as a result of viewing it.

If that doesn't address your concern, I'm sure you could pass on the movie and make a donation to a needy family of a team member or to an appropriate charity.

Well you read way too much into that, and all wrong. I hope the SEALs get some of the money because they have short careers without the best pay and it would be very nice to have a nest egg when they get out. They certainly earned it. And if others are getting rich off of them, they should be entitled to some of it since they are the stars and the reason for the movie.

Being held in high regard is a wonderful thing but it doesn’t keep diapers on the kids back home and make the car payment.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. Not sure how you can compensate a active duty person though, outside of contributing to a charity set up to support families. All of us can do that, including those who make money from movies like this.

The producers, however rich they get, have done something that is immeasurably greater than a monetary contribution. I suspect they would also be inclined to help in other ways, too, but I didn’t leave the movie pondering that.

Maybe we’ll find out by other means.

No. lol. Top Gun did not give any money to Pensacola Pilots. I think the SEALS will be satisfied that they are portrayed so honestly and great.
