Madison -- Gov. Scott Walker will not challenge any signatures in an attempt to stop a recall election from being held against him later this year, according to a media report.
The election if held would represent only the third recall election for a governor is U.S. history.
Walker faced a deadline Monday to challenge the signatures and a campaign spokeswoman told WisPolitics Monday that the Republican governor had not had enough time to examine the signatures. The spokeswoman, Ciara Matthews, did not immediately respond to a phone and email seeking comment.
Organizers gathered more than 1 million signatures in 60 days seeking to force the recall well over the 540,000 valid signatures needed. Over the last month, Walker and Republicans have been examining the signatures seeking to find ones to challenge as invalid.
Walker had 10 days under state law to challenge signatures and a Dane County judge granted him an additional 20 days. But Walker was turned down when he sought more time.
Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said the election agency has to continue its review of the petitions including the search for duplicate signatures. Currently, the agency has until March 19 to complete that review but Magney said he wasnt sure how much time it would take.
Thats something were obviously still working on, Magney said.
If the board concludes that the signatures are valid, the election would be ordered for essentially six weeks later. If there is a primary election, it would be held on that date with the general election four weeks after that.
~snip~
In its motion earlier this month, Walker's campaign indicated it could challenge as many as 100, 000 signatures - well below what would be needed to prevent a recall election.

Wisconsin recall challenge update ping
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Oh yeah, it is obvious that Mickey Mouse and Adolph Hitler are valid signatures. God help us.

The left uses scorched earth tactics. The right does not. If we don’t fight for every inch of the battlefield, evil will win.
So, lets all just roll over and give in to the honest, “for the little guy” unions. WTF?
Sorry for the double post, I am ANGRY
The money is better spent winning the recall election. If Walker wins the unions are in serious deep kimshi.
I’m angry too, but I’m going to continue entering names into the True the Vote data base for future ammunition. (Verify the Recall)
I think the validity of the signatures is bigger than any campaign. For one thing, the GAB criteria for a good signature is so loose that any one of us could just sit down and copy names off a list, scribble a fake signature, and wed be good to go, according to the GAB. That law has to be changed, or well be doing over elections for the rest of our lives.
Yesterday, I had Richard Gebhardt, Thomas F O’Neal, and Mollie B McGuire on the same petition — signatures 1, 2, and 4. Fake signatures or coincidence? 2 Dem pols and 1 19th century union icon. Somebody needs to check if people by those names really live at those addresses. Right now, I’m leaning toward fake personas.
A friend from WI said that Walker’s campaign fund for the recall is unlimited while the opposition is still bound by campaign finance laws. Some weird loophole. Anyway, good news for our side!
This was the reason I never got involved on the Walker side and focused on Verify the Recall. There was no chance that the Walker org was going to get extra time and that the efforts would be for naught.
I put it on the State board but VTR so far has this:
- Based on blank lines from sig pages there are only 850K signatures as opposed to PR from the left stating 1 million.
- At least 50K illegitimate sigs that are proveable
- 230K sigs that have been flagged for review by the GAB (we know these will be accepted)
This hard work could possibly leave only around 540K legit sigs if we had a non-political GAB.
Hopefully PAC’s will be pounding all summer that we’re spending 15 million on a recall where it is quite possible that due to fraud or improper accountability on sig sheets that the left didn’t even meet the threshold for the recall election.
Mickey Mouse can sign a petition. But he can’t vote.
Maybe deep down, Walker wants the recall vote...and when it fails miserably, it will strengthen his position.
I meant to add that the VTR people have the ability to analyze and run those checks which is why we should complete their DB, as tedious as it is. Furthermore, they can check to see if the address is real, or a vacant lot.
I am challegnging a lot more than the 10-15% that this article refers too. The signatures that come across my screen seldom match the printed name. I am challenging about 75%. Usually the middle initial is the problem. It’s included, or left out, of either the signature or the printed name generally.
I’m going to keep on keeping on until they tell me to stop.
It may strengthen him, but unfortunately it will make RINO Dale Shultz think of himself as an even bigger hero to the “real” people of WI and continue to block progress in the WI Senate.
We’re going to need another round of elections State wide to fix it.
I did both. But, the criteria for the 2 efforts was different. VTR checks to see if the sigs match and has us enter all pertinent info into the DB so that it can be checked for bad addesses and duplicates.
The Victory centers just had us checking dates to see if the signatures were within the allowable time period and the circulator signed AFTER all the people.
The first name my wife screened was a multiple felon: felony tax evasion, felony domestic abuse. Perfect Democrat in anyone’s ledger.
That was my initial impression as well. His staff has had a chance to inspect the petitions and he made a calculation on whether or not he could successfully satisfy the challenge requirement in the time allotted. They must have determined they could not.
So he’s going all out - presuming that the numeric value expressed in the petitions do not represent the actual forces on the field and that his chance of prevailing in the vote are satisfactory.
I sure as hell hope so - the stakes are huge!
I suspect it came down to not enough contested signatures to bring the total below 540K.
WI FReepers, How are the polls looking lately?
