NASHVILLE (AP) Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday slammed rival Rick Santorum as a "big labor Republican," accusing him of siding with unions over Memphis-based FedEx when the Senate grappled with a labor dispute in the 1990s.
Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman and House Speaker, is hoping to revive his struggling campaign in the South, and he tailored his message Monday to Republican voters in Tennessee. Although polls show a close race between Santorum and Mitt Romney, Gingrich challenged the former Pennsylvania senator and his conservative credentials.
"I think there are profound reasons that Rick lost the Senate race by the largest margin in Pennsylvania history in 2006 and I think it's very hard for him to carry that all the way to the general," Gingrich said. "Then he comes South and you take the case right here. He voted for the unions over FedEx. I suspect most folks in the state don't know that. But in fact he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania and I suspect when you get to Memphis and you say to people, 'Gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx give into the unions.' Santorum won't be as popular the following morning."
Gingrich was referring to a provision in a 1996 spending bill for the Federal Aviation Administration that sought to help FedEx truck drivers in their efforts to organize.

Why do the true conservative candidates destroy each other?!
Newt helped balance budgets for 4 years as Speaker.
He also was the leader behind Contract with America and GOP takeover of congress after 40 years. He also was the force behind welfare reform.
Santorum otoh has no major accomplishments in his record which I am aware of. I am still trying to find where he took the leadership to cut anything major. It is hard to see how he is anything close to a true fiscal conservative.
These two idiots, Gingrich and Santorum, along with that other idiot Ron Paul are doing a BANG-UP job of helping ROMNEY get nominated.
The more they slice and dice each other, the closer we are to choosing between a Marxist Muslim and a RINO par excellance!!
Right. Santorum voted against the auto bailout and Gingrich calls him a “big labor Republican”! Santorum appeals to the blue-collar union and Reagan Democrats and this is a must-win constituency to wrestle back the rust-belt states in the Republican column. So far Santorum leads in PA, OH, and came close to a seismic upset in a squeaker of a race in MI after being outspent 5 to 1 by Romney and having faced the Romney-Paul tag team. Santorum is our best bet against Obama.
Newt, Newt, Newt - - - . When you are on message, you are the best, but when you run around boo-hooing about the other guys in the schoolyard you sound as silly as a kid boo-hooing about the other guys in the schoolyard.
Make up your mind: Do you want to be a campaigner or a complainer?
Newt wasn’t boo-hooing, he was correctly describing Santorum, and giving details of his votes and his history...
what do you call some of the things Sanctimonium has said about Newt, including his ad saying romney and newt were no different than obama.... boohooing? whining? complaining?
So why is Newt helping Romney again? :)
Yes! I’ve never seen such a bunch of crybabies!
Romney has made a profession out of bad mouthing the other kids on the schoolyard.
The next time that Romney gives a stump speech without a boo-hooing, whining, complaining, or bad mouthing his fellow candidates, that time will be the first time.
Correction, Santorum neither voted for or against the auto bailout. If he did, he was a man ahead of his time, because he cast his last vote in the Senate in 2006. The auto bailout was in 2009.
You are correct. I should have said that Santorum spoke against the auto bail-out.
Newt was right.
Santorum also voted against right to work laws, that will not play well in the South.
He wouldn't have a career if he hadn't squeaked into the senate during the 1994 "Republican Revolution." Santorum went on to be compromised by the establishment, to become the third ranking GOP senator.
He voted to confirm Sonya Sotomayor, teeing her up to become Obama first Supreme Court nominee. He wanted to increase the Amtrak budget by 61%, adding an another $550 million. So proud of this, he cut a TV ad saying it wouldn't sit well with the Bush White House.
I keep hearing how "conservative" Santorum is. On aspects of social policy, perhaps, but what about everything else he's done from Labor to lobbying?
