Former Georgia Republican Rep. Bob Barr supports Newt Gingrichs campaign for president, and told The Daily Caller other libertarians should consider joining him.
Barr was elected to Congress in 1994 and worked alongside Gingrich as he became Speaker of the House. Barr left office in 2003 and in 2008 ran as the Libertarian Partys presidential candidate, receiving more than 500,000 votes nationwide.
Explaining his support for Gingrich, a politician not often considered a libertarian darling, Barr told The Daily Caller, Im very comfortable and happy supporting Newt, adding, its not to say that other candidates like Ron Paul dont have very good ideas.
The former congressman has served as a surrogate for Gingrichs campaign, primarily reaching out to groups supportive of the Second Amendment. He said he has some policy differences with Gingrich, but finds his political track record reassuring.
Of all of the Republican candidates, he is the one best equipped and with an actual track record of accomplishing important conservative and libertarian goals, said Barr. A track record to me is a much better indicator of where these candidates truly stand than what they may say.

I think we could win this thing if we all would put our differences aside and support Newt since he has the leadership experience, the knowledge of American history and the solutions that can help to repair the country from the socialist agenda in which is in all facets of our lives. We are heading off of a cliff. Like Newt, I am tired of watching America’s decay. If we continue to divide, it’s all Romney’s; too many are buying the lie that Newt cannot beat Obama. Newt can beat him. Sarah Palin needs to help like Gov Perry, Fred Thompson and some others are doing. Imo.
I don’t know why Bob is telling Libertarians what to do here. He said he was a Republican again, this year, when he bailed on running for Congress and backed the GOP candidate for the seat. He is an admitted GOP guy. Libertarians hate Barr.
BTW, this endorsement is old news. Apparently Barr endorsed Newt officially last year, upsetting Lew Rockwell and the Libertarians.
Bob Barr: Of all of the Republican candidates, he (Newt) is the one best equipped and with an actual track record of accomplishing important conservative and libertarian goals.
Bob Barr: A track record to me is a much better indicator of where these candidates truly stand than what they may say.”
Well, there you have it. A track record is far, far more important to me than what a candidate says. Many people are surprised by how far left President Obama has governed. It was no surprise at all to many FReepers, because we knew his track record. Same thing goes for Romney. Is there any doubt about how he’ll govern? There shouldn’t be. He left a pretty miserable, big government and socially liberal record as governor.
Nice try Laz. Barr is in good company with the Libertarians. This has been going on for quite some time now.
So it’s wrong for Barr to restate his support for Newt? Should we disregard any support for Santorum that was also mentioned more than 6 months ago?
Go Newt!
Whoops.
Barr is hated by Libertarians. The Grand Pooba of the party said as much yesterday in his own words. Lew Rockwell is the official head of that movement. Ron Paul is one of his and Murray Rothbards disciples. Generally what Lew says is what filters out through the party and is carried as gospel. Know what you are talking about before you try to show off.

Why do you think Barr came groveling back the the GOP? Because the Libs didn't want to be associated with him anymore.
The antagonism is no big deal. We’re all just trying to get our guy to the nomination.
That aside, the Libertarian support for Newt is pretty cool given the Conservative angle of course.
>> Know what you are talking about before you try to show off.
Yeah, that’s what I’m doing — showing off. Don’t be a dick.
And you’re wrong, by the way. The breadth of Libertarianism is not as narrow as you’re making it out to be.
What exactly did I say about Newt in my post. I want and exact quote or an apology from you. You are the Santorum troll that bad mouths him at every turn on his threads. My comment was directed at Barr. I would wait around for the apology but I doubt you have the honesty or class to give one.
Do you think that is appropriate language toward another FReeper in posts?
It’s the same attitude I see with the Newt naysayers as I see with the Palin haters.
We have here a flawed candidate (arent they all? Even RR had some issues) but one that has governed in a way that backs up the rhetoric. Now since we as conservatives AGREE with the wide majority of their public statements and have a historical record of them that matches it, can someone please explain to me why it makes logical sense to fight against people we agree with philosophically?
I could see if Newt or Palin governed like libs, but they didn’t. And this is why I think so many ‘conservatives’ are anything but. Conservatives should think critically and logically. Trashing Newt is anything but.
Do we want drilling?
Do we want a coherent foreign policy?
Do we want American over Islamic law?
Do we want legislators or judges making law?
Do we want Courts or the people deciding abortion or Homosexual marriage?
Do we want the current state of the economy and the regs/favoritism etc that created it?
These are issues where Newt is rock solid. And they are the big issues of the day. So why the hate from fellow ‘conservatives’?
And you would have expected anything less from a Newt supporter ?

I almost forgot this bit of bashing the other day on a Santorum thread. The unsubstantiated twitter line stuck in my mind. Isn't this the type of stuff you are accusing me of on this thread? You are full of these constant digs at "Ricky" on Santorum threads.
I see, you’re above reproach despite the veiled ridicule you dish out. If you’re so concerned decorum, don’t initiate the derision.
No derision here unless you are a Bob Barr fanatic.
