Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates said that President Barack Obama told him he supports a two percent national energy consumption tax, though the president said it likely could not be implemented because of gridlock in Congress.
We certainly need a price on carbon, Gates said at the Energy Innovation Summit in Washington on Tuesday. (RELATED: Full coverage of the energy world)
Whats key is the carbon tax in the 20-to-50 year period, and can politicians do something today that would make it crystal clear to a risk-taker that theres going to be a substantial carbon tax during the relevant time period, Gates said. If Im innovating in power plants today for people who buy power plants ten years from now, [the goal is that] their equation will favor the clean technology.
The former chief executive of Microsoft, currently rated by Forbes Magazine as the second-richest person in the world, said that President Obama was receptive to his views on energy policy.
What we said is that, by putting a two percent tax on energy consumption, you could fund this additional scientific investment, and it would have a very good payback, Gates said.
The president was great, Gates continued. He met with us and said of course this makes sense, but with the gridlock that we have today on this, the likelihood of that kind of allocation including the tax revenue that would support it is very low, and that is deeply unfortunate.

Why even bother collecting taxes anymore ! , just tell it like it is and reduce every citizens allowance
[ Hard to say that with a straight face about someone who made a perfect score on his SATs and was a billionaire software engineer ]
You’ve evidently never been to college..
I’ve met some very dumb professors..
And democrats are not very smart or they wouldn’t be democrats..
And most journalists are democrats...
NO Marxist is smart.. and all socialists are stupid to some degree.. or they would be capitalists..
George Soros is not very smart.. he just connives a lot..
oh, yes, let’s get the carbon-credit trading scam going again - that’s the ticket
Windows always was nothing but a shell over DOS.
OS/2 was a real Operating System, designed and built O-O from its foundation.
But as in politics, the media sided with Gates over IBM. They believed Gates was for the little guy and IBM was for the big guy.
The media covered over Windows flaws and they distorted and emphasized OS/2's drawbacks.
They were dead wrong. I know. I was there. And we still pay the price today with bloated, garbage software based on Windows (DOS).
[ They were dead wrong. I know. I was there. ]
me too....
Gates became wealthy by creating a monopoly. A little value creation coupled with government assisted value capture. What could go wrong?
‘Smart’ is a subjective term...
I say Gates is not very wise...intelligence has little to do with wisdom and common sense. Gates is mostly familiar with having his demands met willingly. He is a notorious bully.
Making energy more expensive is certainly at the top of America’s wish list at the moment..... NOT
Gates is a leftist.
We already know that I think.
Maybe he is a software Savant or something. lol.
Google is now to be called siftware BTW.

I agree. He and his old man have been trying for years to get a state income tax passed in WA, which currently does not have one.
Gates might be smart, but there are alot of smart people in the world.
Besides, how smart can he be if believes in AGW?
I would put him in the category of good businessman, NOT a technological visionary.
