Newt Gingrich, never shy.
“President Obama must announce today in his Nashua address that he is firing Secretary Chu and replacing him with a pro-American-energy appointment,” said a statement from Gingrich, who cited a POLITICO story about Chu’s appearance before a House Appropriations subcommittee.
“If he doesn’t, then the American people will know the president is still committed to his radical ideology, which wants to artificially raise the cost of energy,” Gingrich added.
“Yesterday [Obama’s] secretary of anti-energy Dr. Chu literally testified in Congress that he did not favor lowering the price of gasoline, that they had no alternative policy to lower the price of gasoline and that his goal was to get us on to other things,” Gingrich said.
“Dr. Chu is apparently a brilliant scientist,” the Republican presidential hopeful said. “I’m for allowing him to go back to science as rapidly as possible. In fact I suspect the American people would chip in to buy the airplane ticket later on today.”
Still, good for him for outright saying what he surely can’t be alone in desiring. Plenty of folks who heard or read Steven Chu’s straight-faced, stunning congressional testimony about gas prices — all to the effect that the administration is just not particularly interested to lower the high price of gas — had to wonder why this guy is Energy Secretary, Nobel Prize in physics aside. Couple that testimony with his surreal assessment of himself as a steward of taxpayer money today and it’s hard not to be sympathetic toward Newt Gingrich’s latest crusade.
Chu might have been on more solid ground with his remarks if this administration had done more to actually move toward energy independence than it has. Other than sinking money in losing solar enterprises, the administration has taken no major steps toward that goal, neither boosting domestic production (production is up, but it takes years for oil and other fuels to come online, so O can’t take credit for the increase that has occurred under his administration) nor encouraging innovation through regulatory rollback.
I think he should be tried or treason and hanged!
Obama’s Marxists are on the march toward making the USA their third world workers hell hole. They MUST BE STOPPED!

Firing him is an idea to Chu on, at the very least.
Newt is right, Chu should be fired immediately, like today.
That kind of blatant rhetoric, or a person who would say it so outright, who holds a position of Power that is meant to equally represent every American, has no place in Public Office. Not in America anyway!

Having no Secretary of Energy would be better.
I know this won’t happen, but if Romney wins the nomination, he couldn’t select a better VP candidate than Gingrich. With the right platform, Gingrich would destroy Obama.
Sadly, Romney’s ego won’t allow him to select Gingrich, and Gingrich’s ego wouldn’t allow him to accept the role of 2nd chair.

There are many FReepers who suspect that the reason why Ron Paul, out of ALL candidates from the time Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann were still in, NEVER attacked Romney even once, while training his rhetorical guns at everyone else ( especially Newt and Santorum ), is because he and Romney have a secret agreement where Ron Paul would help Romney win the nomination IN EXCHANGE for Romney choosing Ron Paul’s son — Senator Rand Paul as VP.

I’ll add to that — Having NO DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (which we never had prior to Jimmy Carter creating it ) would even be better.
JUST ABOLISH IT.
Its original purpose was to help this nation in energy conservation, energy-related research, radioactive waste disposal, and domestic energy production.
Let’s ask ourselves how these tasks were accomplished PRIOR to having this Department and return to that state of affairs.
A Romney/Rand Paul ticket. Could be worse, but Rand Paul doesn’t have the polish that Gingrich has. I’ve seen Rand Paul get quite flustered, Newt would fend off the MSM while doing serious damage to the Obama campaign.
If Gingrich is sincere about how important this election will be, he’ll remain active even if he loses the nomination.
The problem is that Romney and Gingrich have absolutely opposed visions, and there is no way that they could be harmonized.
Santorum and Romney are pretty close and I could see Santorum as Romney’s VP.
Romney and Paul, although Paul has not attacked Romney, are very distant, but I think it’s certainly possible that an agreement has been made for Rand Paul (Ron Paul’s son) to be the VP. So this would probably explain why RP has stayed in and muddied the waters for so long.
Why should Newt lower himself to run with Romney!!

Some of these notions about Newt’s ego are very overblown. I am 100% sure he would take the V.P. slot under just about anybody. If his ego motivated him in any way, it would lead him to want to add to his tale in the history books, which would mean accepting the V.P. slot. There is no way Newt would hold a permanent grudge even when he had a right to over Romney’s lies and smears. Holding a silly personal grudge is the kind of thing Romney would do because he doesn’t value the country, its people or the conservative movement. Newt believes the best interests of the country far outweigh his own. He even told Piers Morgan after Florida that he would take a role in Romney’s administration if asked, because he felt it was a duty, like being called to serve in wartime.
I think Romney almost has to pick Newt as the V.P. to find a way to unite the party and help persuade the base he’s going to lean conservative. I honestly don’t know if Romney is simply an empty suit that wants the title, and will do whatever the powers-that-be tell him to, or if he has a liberal agenda and wants to drive the party to the left. Picking Newt would be an indication he’s simply an empty suit, and in that case there’s no one I’d rather have feed him his lines than Newt. If he picks someone like Christie or Rubio, it would indicate Romney’s heart is with moderation and he would indeed help to destroy the conservative movement. Santorum is simply too weak an intellect and personality to have any influence as V.P. whatsoever. He would be a Biden-style pick and would simply be a sign of dealmaking or trying to get votes from PA and the Midwest.
Romney's already been pushed to the right on his tax plan by Newt as part of this good primary process that the GOP-E and moderates so desperately want to end. I'm not sure Romney is a liberal ideologue, but perhaps just an ambitious, power-hungry Bonfire of the Vanities type. If he thought Newt could give him an electability advantage, he'd pick him. The GOP-E would probably never let him do it though, and he'll always do what they tell him above the voters or anyone else.
Having no Department of Energy would be even better yet.
