George Will: Take Congress, not White House
Politico ^ | 3/2/2012 | Tim Mak

Posted on 03/02/2012 6:28:27 AM PST by KansasGirl

Columnist George Will says the 2012 presidential looks like it might be a lost cause for Republicans and believes that the primary goal of conservatives should be to retain control of the House and win the Senate so Congress can restrain President Barack Obama while the GOP grooms its talent for 2016.

“Romney and Rick Santorum… are conservatives, although of strikingly different stripes. Neither, however, seems likely to be elected… If either is nominated, conservatives should vote for him,” Will writes in his upcoming Sunday column, obtained in advance by POLITICO.

However, Will argues, that control of both house of Congress is more attainable and more important.

“[T]here would come a point when… conservatives turn their energies to a goal much more attainable than… electing Romney or Santorum president. It is the goal of retaining control of the House and winning control of the Senate.. [C]onservatives this year should have as their primary goal making sure Republicans wield all the gavels in Congress in 2013,” writes Will.

Thanks Romney and GOP-E. No doubt they would rather see Obama re-elected than a conservative.

The German General Staff thought the same thing. It’s a matter of historical record. They thought that they could control Hitler. Didn’t turn out that way though.

If Republicans keep control of the House and win the senate, they will take the WH also....Has it ever happened where a party takes over a chamber in a presidential year and not win the white house?

What good is controlling Congress when Obama goes around them using his czars and federal agencies while Congress sits by doing nothing about it?

Obama MUST be defeated, as he’s demonstrated his contempt of Congress and the Constitution, by means of his various end runs, edicts, and czar appointments, which flout the will of Congress and the Constitution.

Exactly... we need to ignore this “we can’t win” propaganda and take the WH!!! This is desperately important and certainly doable.

If Obama actually respected the Constitutional separation of powers, this argument would be valid. As it is, he’s already shown he will happily run roughshod over it and the Republicans don’t have the backbone to stop him.

They got the House in 2010. How’d that debt ceiling thing go? How about that stupid payroll tax cut? How about...I know it's only one half of one third, blah, blah, blah.

The truth is, Will doesn't want our kind of conservative in the White House. To a Beltway Republican, the thought of some rube like Santorum as President leaves them in shivers.

Fortunately, the great mass of Americans will ignore this defeatist screed.

I’m just glad this nonsense was written by a guy who lost his credibility years ago.

Has George never heard of down ticket voting? If he truly believes nobody would show up to vote for a president, well they won’t be there to vote for their congressman either.

Its looking increasingly likely that I’ll go to the polls to vote in the downticket races only.

If we win, what have we won?

Romney is almost as bad as Obama.
The Republicans will do the same thing they did the last time we had a majority. They will screw it up.

Yeah I know cynicism is a terrible thing, but we don’t have a lot to work with here. Republicans may slow the downward slide, but they won’t stop it. Our only real chance is with Gingrich, and he isn’t going to be President.
