Texas Teacher Who Told Student ‘Go Back to Mexico’ Reinstated by School District
Stand With Arizona ^ | 03-03-2012 | John Hill

You called, you emailed, you bombarded their Facebook page with outrage. And Shirley Bunn is now back on the job.

The Arlington School District this weekend reinstated Bunn. You may recall from our post a week earlier that she had been suspended for telling a frequently disruptive Hispanic student "Go back to Mexico", after he repeatedly asked her for a set of forms in Spanish, yelling "I'm Mexican...I'm Mexican". Even after Ms. Bunn told him he could get Spanish-language forms in the main office, the kid continued to harrass her for Spanish forms, yelling "I'm Mexican...I'm Mexican", after which Bunn admitted she lost her temper and told him where he could go (and indeed the vast majority of our commenters agreed with her sentiments).

On Friday, the school board voted 5-2 to reinstate her to the school. An emotional Bunn was brought to tears over the ordeal, and most of the parents in attendance were overjoyed to have this two-time "Teacher of the Year" back in class.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our post. Nearly 3,000 SWA members left messages on the school district's Facebook page, and many thousands more sent emails or made phone calls to demand Bunn reinstatement, and the word spread as new site TheBlaze.com linked to our posts the next day.You made a big difference, and all's well that ends well!

But not everyone was happy. The pro-amnesty group LULAC was in attendance and wanted Bunn terminated. They reacted angrily when the vote came through. Said Luis Castillo, a past president of the Arlington LULAC: "The Arlington School Board condones racial remarks by it's teachers. That's very disturbing."

What's really disturbing is that any school board would take an extremist group like LULAC seriously in the first place. This is the same group which has declared the U.S.-Mexican border "illegal", and has been caught transporting illegal aliens from the border to Houston in their "shuttle vans". And who can forget the Wisconsin LULAC member who once claimed that Arizona does not share a border with Mexico. NO elected official should ever again let LULAC in their door, let alone consider their advice seriously.

Hey, she was only responding to a student yelling, “I’m Mexican.” So, she told him he should go back to Mexico. Seems to me that the student is the one that started with the racial statements...

Hispanics aren’t a race it’s an ethnic group.

Exactly, the racism argument doesn’t apply. She may be a nationalist but not a racist.

All Mexicans are not Hispanic.

One of my daughter’s was accused of making a racist statement in class when she was in high school. The school held a hearing to determine if she would be suspended- temporarily or permanently. A favorite teacher of hers had been very sick and the class had a sub. for quite a while. One day they announced the teacher would be coming back, one of the Mexican students in the class who was always bragging about how great Mexico is/claiming the SW for Mexico crud and expecting favoritism said he did not want the teacher to come back. He went into a tirade about how it was kept a secret what was wrong with the teacher and he felt she should not be able to return because she might make everyone sick. My daughter stood up to him and he said there were other people that didn’t want the teacher to come back, my daughter told him there were a lot of people that thought he should go back to Mexico too. Oh boy she was in trouble for a while; they had the hearing to determine if her statement was racist. The group did decide my daughter did not make a racist statement. This was several years ago, I am sure glad I don’t have any kids in school now, they would likely not make it.

The administrator who removed her from the classroom should be the one being disciplined — terminated.

Absolutely. If someone is yelling at me that they're Mexican, I'd say fine, pick up some postcards, then go home to Mexico.

Any and all forms need to be in English only.

If the foreigners (aliens) don’t like it,they can all GTFO!

Let me guess... anchor baby? His parents were illegals but he was "born here" so that made him "American," but mere birth on American soil just wasn't enough to make him loyal to and love this country.

“The Arlington School Board condones racial remarks by it’s teachers.....How is “Go back to Mexico” racist? I was told, once, to go back to sleep. Does that mean I’m the sandman?

Likely was an anchor baby- may have been illegal himself for that matter.
