Volt Production ‘Temporarily Halted,’ Hundreds of Workers Laid Off

General Motors told 1,300 employees at its Detroit-Hamtramck factory that they were being “temporarily laid off” for five weeks as the company halts production of the Chevrolet Volt, the Detroit Free Press reports.

“Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand,” said GM spokesman Chris Lee.

“We needed to maintain proper inventory and make sure that we continued to meet market demand,” he told The Hill in a phone interview.

The VOLT is the perfect example of Obama’s Presidency.

Over-hyped, over-promised, under-delivered.

Volt sales are up so Chevrolet is decreasing production.

In related news, the chocolate ration has been increased to 25 grams per week.

The Chevy Volt is the perfect example of a government solution creating a problem. And Obozo doubles and triples down on FAIL. [Hint: The Law of Unintended Consequences.]

The VOLT & the DOLT - hopefully they both end up in the waste bin of history.

Did you see Eric Boling on Fox & Friends one morning when he showed a clip from a camera that had been placed in the Volt he was test driving? He lives 20 miles from Manhattan—probably Montclair NJ. He charged the battery for 12 hours, got into the Volt and drove into the city. The camera was aimed at the dash. At 18!!! miles the battery switched over to gas! He got the same result the 2nd day.

I drive a ‘97 Toyota Camry V-6. Many times I drove from Philadelphia to Cleveland, stopping for my first fill-up at the first gas station off the Ohio T/P airport exit. The tolls cost more than the gas! This was winter and summer, with A/C on when necessary! It’s still a “new car” to me—has 88,000 miles on it. Driven by a little old lady and in great shape. As gas climbed, I drove my husband’s 4 cylinder Camry.

I’ll bet must of those Volts were purchased by the Guvmint—price is no object when it comes to spending our money!
(My husband’s an engineer too.)

Obama is going to tell us they are selling so well that the workers have been working 25-hour days. GM is giving them a couple months off since they are so exhausted.

The word on the street is that the Motor Trend Car of the Year award is a bought and sold item. Just go through the list of cars MT has bestowed this "honor" on over the years. Chevy Citation, AMC Alliance, Plymouth Volare, Chevy Vega, Chrysler Cirrus. All uninspiring losers.

Q: What's the difference between the Volt and the Edsel?

A: We (the taxpayers) 'own' the Volt...

That’s a good point. My only disagreement would be that although some can afford the car the question becomes, “Do I want to spend $40,000 on THAT car?” I am fortunate and can afford a car in that price range, but I wouldn’t spend that kind of money on any GM product. I usually rent cars when I travel and have tried some of the offerings of late from GM’s so-called “luxury division” and found them all to be wanting.

That is an excellent point. The Ford looks like a far nicer and attractive vehicle. I would bet it will blow the doors off the Dolt that is saddled with ugly styling and a bad reputation.

The blog "Autoextremist" has said it is a Game Changer and something to the effect even the Camry looks 10 years old.

I am waiting for the 1st drives in the car mags. I know someone who has driven it, but they won't say a word. If it is as good as I think it is, it is indeed a game changer and the Volt is Toast....

I just saw a ad about a hour ago for the Volt. It shows what I presume is the first car driving off the line. Funny to think that that car may very well be still unsold (or burnt to a crisp) and all the Union workers clapping and cheering as it drove away are now laid off.

The only reason we got rid of my earlier Camry, which had 120,000 miles on it, was because my husband said “I’m tired of looking at that car in the driveway!! Of course he never said that about his MG or either of his Alfa Romeos!:)

I have 1 friend and 1 online aquaintance who have cars that get better mileage than the volt. The first one is a 12 year old Jetta TDI. It gets approx 40 MPG, and it's been paid for for 7 years. The other guy has a 1958 AMC Rambler that gets 32 to 35 MPG with a flathead six and 3 speed manual. The volt is a non- solution to a problem that has repeatedly already been solved.
