'Die, die Foreigners!' [Mark Steyn]
National Review ^ | 3/3/2012 | Mark Steyn

Say what you like about Afghans, but they’re admirably straightforward. The mobs outside the bases enflamed over the latest Western affront to their exquisitely refined cultural sensitivities couldn’t put it any plainer:

“Die, die, foreigners!”

And foreigners do die. USAF Lieutenant Colonel John Loftis, 44, and Army Major Robert Marchanti II, 48, lost their lives not on some mission out on the far horizon in wild tribal lands in the dead of night but in the offices of the Afghan Interior Ministry. In a “secure room” that required a numerical code to access. Gunned down by an Afghan “intelligence officer.” Who then departed the scene of the crime unimpeded by any of his colleagues.

Some news outlets reported the event as a “security breach.” But what exactly was breached? The murderer was by all accounts an employee of the Afghan government, with legitimate rights of access to the building and its secure room, and “liaising” with his U.S. advisers and “mentors” was part of the job. In Afghanistan, foreigners are dying at the hands of the locals who know them best. The Afghans trained by Westerners, paid by Westerners, and befriended by Westerners are the ones who have the easiest opportunity to kill them. It is sufficiently non-unusual that the Pentagon, as is the wont with bureaucracies, already has a term for it: “green-on-blue incidents,”

Bring the troops home now....and upon Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, resume 24/7 bombing via B-52 sorties, drone swarms and any other method that won’t allow one more American or Allied soldier to die for nothing for a people who hate us no matter what we do. Not one American soldier is worth a million of them. Not one.

If Afghanistan disappeared from the face of the earth and with it all the scientific, mathematical, medical, agricultural and educational contributions it has given to mankind....would anybody notice?

We should pull out now and let them rot.

They don’t deserve the help that they have received.

I got at this point with the Iraqis too.

Screw ‘em.

My German is not so great, but...

"'Die, die Foreigners!"

Doesn't that mean "The, the Foreigners!" ???

I have a problem with an unconditional pull out.
What does that say to our troops that have died for the 99.9% of the good mussies there?

I have relatives who get sent there every summer for a few months; they tell me the Afghans are lowlife ignorant sub-human scum. They also say it will quickly go back to the way it always has been there when we do leave. When the Russkies nerve gassed them, they were doing the world a favor. Not one more American should die there.

Bring them home, but first destroy every piece of modern infrastructure in that God-forsaken hell hole. All the schools, electrical power stations, water works, public buildings, every structure. Destroy all the vehicles. Lay wast to the land so they can live like the barbarians they are.

Mark Steyn has hit this one so far out of the park it's still flying, and will soon enter low earth orbit. His concluding paragraph is absolutely chilling:

That “crusader fort” image has a broader symbolism. The post-American world is arising before our eyes. According to the IMF, China will become the dominant economic power by 2016. Putin is on course to return to the Kremlin corner office. In Tehran, the mullahs nuclearize with impunity. New spheres of influence are being established in North Africa, in Central Europe, in the once reliably “American lake” of the Pacific. Can America itself be a crusader fort? A fortress secure behind the interminable checkpoints of Code Orange TSA bureaucratic torpor while beyond the moat the mob jeers “Die, die, foreigners”? Or in the end will it prove as effortlessly penetrable as the “secure room” of the Afghan Interior Ministry?

I agree. Unfortunately, an acquaintance told me late last month that his unit is already scheduled to go back to that litterbox in 2013.

My son’s Air Guard unit is due there in 2013 too. They were supposed to go this last year but ended up in Korea when the Nork’s shelled that island. My brother-in-law went last year with the Corps of Engineers. Enough is enough for wasting American lives on nothing.

“Six weeks after the last NATO soldier leaves Afghanistan, it will be as if we were never there.”

Does anyone doubt this?

What he is saying is that The 50 or so years of absolute American dominance is over. The reason is not that America has declined but that much of the world is catching up.

All the events noted are change. Except for Russia that is actually in decline, growth and modernization are forces demanded by people who have learned that there can be a much better life. America has shown the way. That way includes Chinese teenage girls in Daisy Mae’s. It includes boys in NFL T shirts. That way is change.

It is this love of things modern that fuels the Islamic retrograde effort. There are those who can’t make the mental leap from the far past into the present or future.

I agree we sould pull all of our people (military, civilian and all) out BUT before we leave, destroy EVER damn thing we built there and then leave the country as it was back in the 8th century. If hose neanderthals want to live like they have for the past several hundred years so be it. It will NEVER be a democracy nor anything close. The Russians couldn’t solve the problems there either but obviously learned their lessons much earlier than we have.
