Later today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services, will become the first U.S. senator to publicly call for U.S. led air strikes to halt the violence and atrocities being committed by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"After a year of bloodshed, the crisis in Syria has reached a decisive moment," McCain will say Monday afternoon in a speech on the Senate floor, according to excerpts obtained in advance by The Cable.
"What opposition groups in Syria need most urgently is relief from Assad's tank and artillery sieges in many cities that are still contested. Homs is lost for now, but Idlib, and Hama, and Qusayr, and Deraa, and other cities in Syria could still be saved," McCain will say. "But time is running out. Assad's forces are on the march. Providing military assistance to the Free Syrian Army and other opposition groups is necessary, but at this late hour, that alone will not be sufficient to stop the slaughter and save innocent lives. The only realistic way to do so is with foreign airpower."

I don’t think so. Syria is cosmopolitan compared to Libya
or Saudi. But the longer this goes on with the massacres and the murders by Assad forces the more radicalized the ordinary Syrians will become, and, the outcome less predictable
Which is why Israel is keeping well away from this drama.
What??? After all the peaceful transfers of power in Egypt, Yemen and Libya? Oh, wait...
C’mon, McCain has combat experience in this arena, even from his history with the Forestall and number of jet crashes,...how much better qualified to start a fire...
Who with any learned experience in military operations would advocate explicit tactical and operational missions from the Congressional seat?
All the lessons from Vietnam to the present on how to succeed in warfare, have been thrown out the window by this Administration, to promote political tactics documented to usher in defeat.
“The missiles are flying...Hallelujah...Hallelujah!!!”
The US is broke and all we produce these days are war and pornos. If the world wants us as a police force they should pay for it instead of it always being on our dime. The Saudis could afford to pay us for an invasion of Syria, for instance. All they paid for in the last decade was 9-11 so they have plenty saved up.
Somehow people forget “blowback.” Iran had a progressive, democratic government that would have been our friend, but our wonderful State Department had it overthrown at the behest of - wait for it - our good friends at BP oil. BP sure paid us back for the favor in the Gulf Coast.
Half our trouble in the world has been caused by our own gummint meddling, such as the arming, funding, and training of Al Quada. Ike and Truman both worried about this stuff getting out of hand and they were right. Whatever happened to the Founding Fathers’ idea of “No Foreign Entanglements” Maybe the USSC should think of that when they misinterpret the Constitution.
Soon I expect to hear McCain advocating bombing England.
You misunderstand the area. Money trumps religion and will prevail. There is no real interest among those in control to allow the radical riff raff to get the upper hand.
All that gloom and doom is without real basis
The point of it all is to provide a solid basis for business and growth
Assad is gone. It is but a matter of time
One more thing Johnny boy, you certainly were not in any hurry to help the Christians in Kosovo, you ain’t nuthin but a muslim B@ll licker!
Thanks Free ThinkerNY.
Hey Mclame, STFU you crazy old man.
Yeah, we can drop big stupid fat blondes on them, like his daughter.
I think his daughter would make for a good ‘bunker buster.’
Sorry man, it's just when I hear some, not necessarily you, speak so nonchalantly about American force I tend to get a bit riled. I believe every politician should be afforded the honor of personally viewing our fallen warriors caskets coming home before they vote on sending Americans into battle. It really pissed me off to hear Romney speak of sending carrier groups into battle as an applause line. Someone needs to ask him, why aren't there any Romney's on those carriers? I mean he has five healthy strapping young sons and not one wants to be ordered to Iran by his father? Say what you will about the McCain and Palin families. When it comes to service to country, they are the real deal. Both their sons serve our country under Barack Obama.
I get you.
I get you.
