PRINCETON, NJ -- President Obama's average job approval rating for the month of February in Gallup Daily tracking was 45%, with 47% disapproving, unchanged from January.

President Barack Obama Job Approval -- Monthly Averages, 2011 through February 2012

Obama's job approval in February exceeds the lows seen last summer, when his monthly approval rating dipped to 41% from August through October. That followed a slide from 50% in May after the successful U.S. military mission in Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden. However, despite the recent improvement in his score, it has yet to recover to the level seen at the start of 2011, when 49% approved and 43% disapproved.

Apart from the rally in approval after the bin Laden mission, the last time Obama's monthly approval rating averaged 50% or better was two years ago, in February 2010.

President Barack Obama -- Percentage Approving of Job Performance, Monthly Averages

The 50% approval mark is a crucial one for presidents in a re-election year. All incumbents who have been elected to a second term had a 50% or higher average approval rating by February of that year, and in the case of all but George W. Bush, they maintained that through Election Day.

“Anyone who says this guy can’t be beat should be shunned in conservative media forever.”

Meanwhile, just now on CNN, they pimp the “Obama is going to win Florida,Virginia, and North Carolina!” meme...

That's pretty close to the number who are paying no income taxes and are getting something on the dole.

If the media gave Obama the same treatment it gave Bush, Obama would definitely be well below 40%.

Who are the 45% that approve what he is doing?

13% are black, another 12% are certifiable, that still leaves 20%.

10% maybe Latinos, are the other ten percent the always reliable demonRAT dead?

This is a poll of randomly-selected adults. They're not even necessarily registered voters and probably the pool of likely voters in this bunch is less than half of those interviewed.

I'd love to see his approval ratings in a poll of likely voters. Gotta be less than 40%.

Are you sure there isn’t a decimal point out of place..as in 4.5% approval rating instead of 45%?

Yes, you make excellent points. This is a major flaw in Gallup's traditional methodology for their political polls: they don't sample likely voters only until at most a month or two before the relevant upcoming election.

In fact, I'd go one step further. They don't even screen for American citizenship in their poll respondents; their sample group is adults 18 and over living in the United States. No doubt that the flaws of their technique gives Democrats artificially inflated numbers compared to what they would get in a poll of likely voters.

I thought of that, too. Of course, that wouldn't be a disqualification for registration in all too many jurisdictions. Come to think of it, they probably don't screen for the dead, either.
