"Metro took several steps this week to address complaints that it wasnt taking sexual harassment seriously enough.
The agency has established a new task force to address sexual harassment on the transit system, has created an email box (harassment@wmata.com) for complaints, and is urging its employees to report any cases to police, General Manager Richard Sarles told employees on Friday.
He specifically urged all workers to call Metro Transit Police if riders report any concerns, responding to complaints that some Metro workers had minimized, even laughed, when riders complained. He also called out Metro workers who make disrespectful comments to riders themselves.
I was disturbed to hear their reports about assault and intimidation while riding trains and buses, particularly those accounts which involved our employees making disrespectful comments, Sarles wrote to his more than 11,000 employees in a newsletter on Friday."

You know people say Obama does not show leadership but the Obama supporters in DC see that there is a total jerk off in the White House and they are following his lead.
I know. Getting old is tough, so I don't want to stand up for the whole ride from Montgomery County down to Springfield (like I'm gonna' do that eh), and there was a perfectly good seat with this young woman in it who just ignored me and hogged the whole seat, so I pulled my cane and threatened her ~ put it right up in her face and she didn't even wink ~ then that darned dog of hers under the seat BIT ME!
Not a peep out of the Metro cops ~ (/s)
The “pleasures” of public transport.
What's missing in this story is the race of the victims and perpetrators.
I moved to Arlington, VA around twenty-six months ago. I’ve been a daily METRO user since day one. I would make these five observations as an outsider coming into DC.
First, the top layer of management knows of various significant problems, talks about them in public forums, and never fixes any of them. So have to deal with safety and security, which you’d think was important. Some have to deal with employees who are incompetent. Some deal with budget issues which are monumental. They simply don’t want to fix their problems.
Second, the “animals” are truly not afraid of whatever security DC cops or METRO cops offer. They need to hire a hundred special cops (out of the region) and set up sting after sting every single day.
Third, the maintenance crowd...compared against the guys in London, Paris, Berlin or Frankfurt....are lousy and losers. Maybe a quarter of them can stay....but the rest should be fired, and just hire everything out to contractors, with tight audits on their repairs.
Fourth, I’d require a drug test for every single employee...at least once a month. Fail? You get six weeks suspension on the first episode, with no pay or benefits for that period. Second episode? Fired, with no option of returning.
Fifth and final, double-up the amount of light in every subway area. The ‘animals’ hate extra light and it make things more noticeable.
The biggest problem with incompetence and poor maintenance is affirmative action quotas in hiring and promotion. Many of the Metro employees are hired on the basis of racial quotas and don't know how to do their job. It is almost impossible to get fired. Almost all employees are union. Most escalators don't work on any given day and there are many breakdowns and closings and delays. There was a large crash about a year ago and several people were killed.
Most Metro subcontractors are not the best qualified, but rather are chosen because of political considerations.
