Winston Churchill wrote a memoir about World War 2 , the personalities, circumstances and events leading to the outbreak of the war. His review of these events in "The Gathering Storm" begins after the end of World War 1 and the Treaty of Versailles, under which the Allies and the League of Nations forced draconian war debt reparations on Germany. The post-war naivety of the victorious Allies with respect to their place in the world and their responsibility to maintain the peace, as history shows, resulted in a downward spiral of denial and political pandering, both domestically and on foreign policy matters that would lead, inexorably to another war.
Tired of war and looking for a "peace dividend" the Allies began in the early 1920's to disarm, decommission navies and armies and ignore weapons development and preparedness for war. In the meantime the onerous conditions placed on the German economy as punishment for war ruined Germany's economy and national pride, leading to the rise of Hitler and his National Socialist Party, the Nazis.
A series of missteps and miscalculations by diplomats, and the election of increasingly socialist and isolationist politicians in the western democracies encouraged Hitler's National Socialists in Germany to break post war treaty agreements, surreptitiously re-arm and create an armed force second to none at the time. Hitler's diplomats went to great lengths to assuage the nervous Western governments -- they lied. When the Great Depression hit Europe, the allied countries adopted Keynesian spending polices, deepening and prolonging the Depression. While the West spent money it didn't have on social programs and waste, Hitler built his armies and annexed the Rhineland of France, all of Austria and the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.

-----> Here is Our Churchill
His diplomatic offensive is designed to delay until the time for a strike is most advantageous electorally and to prepare the ground and justify such a strike politically.
Our problem is that the neocons in the Republican Party such as William Kristol would eagerly accept the reelection of Barack Obama in exchange for such a strike and so they are now setting about making it impossible for paleo conservatives to question such a strike or for those of us who support such a strike from objecting to the politics of of it. William Kristol has flatly stated that if Obama strikes, it does not matter if he is doing so as an October Surprise, he should not be criticized.
If Obama properly times such an October Surprise it will sweep him back into the White House.
Just read your post you linked to.
That was excellent! :-)
Here are the new moon dates till after the election.
Any action is likely to occur on or close to these.
22 March 2012
21 April 2012
20 May 2012
19 June 2012
19 July 2012
17 August 2012
16 September 2012
15 October 2012
Israel knows Obama will be forced into entering the fray if they attack. So they may kill two birds with a single stone and attack early. They take care of Iran, the US has to help, and Obama looks like he had to be dragged into the thing... so it won’t help but hinder his election chances.
Take out Iran and weaken Obama at the same time.
Plus the likelihood that Obama will make many blunders during such an action.
Much might turn on the price of gasoline at the pumps in America.
Netanyahu of course is under no moral obligation to shape his policy for the survival of his own country to aid Obama's reelection or to oppose it. But I do think that the Republicans' best way out of this box is for Israel to initiate the strike.
Thanks for your kind words.
No, those are the days of the new moons, when no moon is visible. It’s nice to have total dark when you have unmatched ability to conduct warfare without need of light.
Just don't forget that when Maobama makes blunders, our warriors get killed and maimed.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
It should be noted that even after the war commenced, the appeasers in the British, French, and allied governments kept rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic after the iceberg had been hit. They allowed both Germany and Russia to carve-up the remains of their former Polish ally.
The German's blitz into Norway and Denmark (9 April 1940) took Chamberlain by surprise (”Hitler lied to me”). The German attack into The Low Countries and France (10 May 1940), caused Chamberlain to resign that day as Prime Minister and Winston Churchill was appointed to replace him.
There were still many within the British government who wanted to cut a deal with Hitler and his Nazis as the dreadful news from the war front came in. Churchill's War Cabinet was split between fighting on as the news from France became worse and worse. Foreign Minister, Lord Halifax, was a “let's make a deal” man. However, Churchill's bulldog determination to fight on no matter what eventually prevailed. British and allied troops completed a withdrawal from France (27 May-3 June 1940). France asked for an armistice on 17 June 1940 and surrendered to Hitler on 22 June 1940.
On that date, Britain stood alone against the German war machine. It was PM Winston Churchill who led Britain in her darkest hour as the appeasers were proved wrong.
What we need is a Winston Churchill. What we have is a third-rate Neville Chamberlain sock puppet in the White House. Any military action Barry touches will be a cluster-flop, at best.
Exactly what I have been telling everybody for the last few months. We need him the White House.
A tad hyperbolic.
Iran might indeed destroy Israel, but there is absolutely no way he has any chance of “taking over the world,” which was a real possibility with the Nazis.
Also, if he nukes Israel, they will nuke him right back, anda great deal more effectively. Three Iranian nukes (or even one) would do a real number on Israel, but 200 or 300 Israeli nukes won’t do Iran much good.
Also, Rhineland was not part of France. It was a demilitarized (by several treaties) section of Germany on the west bank of the Rhine. Hitler marched his troops into this part of Germany and remilitarized it.
I think Obama wants to stall any Israeli action against Iran until after the election because he wants to take Iran’s side with no electoral consequences.
Agreed. Where is the King who will send for him when things get bad enough?
“Iran might indeed destroy Israel, but there is absolutely no way he has any chance of taking over the world, which was a real possibility with the Nazis.”
I don’t think Germany ever posed the slightest threat to USA/Canada; they were geared for local European wars, and couldn’t even deal with the distances involved in the Soviet Union. They had no means of projecting force outside a fairly limited radius.
Japan, on the other hand, could project force on a wider range but didn’t have Germany’s manufacturing strength.
Against what war? Wec urrently have soldier in
War is the natural human condition.
Peace is the interval between wars.
Peace is briefly achieved by winning a war.
Then there is Islam..... and pseudo war, sanctions
Sanctions, effective sanctions that cause severe pain and real suffering will bring the war. If the Iranian leaders are resolute, rather than surrender, they will continue and actually increase the attack.
If you back up and take a wide view of nations and events it becomes obvious we are living at the time of a historical cusp. There is an intense desire among radical Islamic fundamentalists to stop the flow of events leading to a modernized future. They long for the purity and sanctity of the not to distant past. They see as anathema the societal changes that have taken hold in Europe and the United States. They see the spread and acceptance of this change to all of Islam as damnation.
What will be the tipping point? What event or series of events will tip on a course that can be deemed favorable. A course that will stop or at least severely retard the progress of modernization events must be plotted and implemented.
Although Iran might not be the centroid of the planning and implementation, Iran is strongly sympathetic. The devolution that was conducted by Ayatollah Homeni involved locking all the doors of a movie theater in Bandar Shapur and then setting it on fire. The movie goers were sacrificed to the cause, to the devolution. The same reasoning produced the sacrifice of thousands in the twin towers.
The tipping point will not come. Iran is on defense, the assertion of principle of death and destruction has been stymied. Over most of Islam, adherents go about their daily business of living well and working toward continued improvement. The course amounts to Islamic evolution. That is change that allows going to the mosque while living an increasingly better life.
The Renaissance is in progress in Islamic lands. The Reformation is following. Rising from the sands of the Arabian desert and from the jungles of Indonesia are rich and populous societies that enjoy their wealth and their Islam.
Osama is dead. The mullahs are in a box. The devolution is withering. The people didnt want it. The coming war of defense will end the devolution.
An interesting post. Could you clarify some assertions so I could decide if I agree with your point (no tipping point, Islam on the defense, etc.)?
“There is an intense desire among radical Islamic fundamentalists to stop the flow of events leading to a modernized future.”
What, one aspect of that “modernized future” is it that fuels the fundamentalists intense desire to stop?
“They long for the purity and sanctity of the not to(o) distant past.”
What sort of “purity and sanctity”?
“They see as anathema the societal changes that have taken hold in Europe and the United States. They see the spread and acceptance of this change to all of Islam as damnation.”
There are many “societal changes” that have taken hold in Europe and the United States, (at varying rates in the states within the continent of Europe, and the USA - as well as in Australia, Japan, China, Russia, South America).
What single “societal change” are you referring to that the mullah-led devolutionists have been so resistant to?
To seek one cause is in my view to misunderstand.
There are two factors. The amount, the volume, of change and the speed, perhaps even acceleration, of change.
There is no single cause, no single event that has produced the devolution. There is no single cause that has resulted in societal change in Europe or the United States.
The overwhelming complexity and speed of change is to many here at Free Republic disconcerting. To those who see and experience immense change in a mere 30 years or perhaps less that has occurred in the west in a more gradual manner over a much longer period, coping is quite difficult.
Sorting it all out is hard.
The ability to travel, lots of automobiles, air planes travel for all, to communicate effortlessly ,to easily learn about the world beyond, to have foreigners and nonbelievers in your midst, to have plenty of food and water, new food, different food, to have children wanting T shirts with logo’s of foreign sports teams, to have schools and educational potential unheard of a generation ago, to have women’s products suddenly ubiquitous when they were just not available at all, to have fantastic malls and shops, to have the tallest building in the world.......
The problem becomes ..... how to integrate the change with the old ways. How to justify small differences with dogma, how to rationalize Television, the internet, with prohibitions against images. How to accept or reject foreign movies and TV depicting just about every sin imaginable when DVD’s and satellite receivers are ubiquitous. The list is quite long.
For some the answer is easy. Discard the old ways. For others the old ways are revered and the new ways are shunned.
When speaking of purity and sanctity perhaps an example will help. There is before, and there is now. In my mind I think of one of our eastern wildernesses or Alaska or the Canadian North West Territory. Compare Knoxville or Anchorage or Calgary with the pristine wilderness areas. The difference is striking. If you have never visited nor spent any time wandering around in the wilderness, the peaceful attraction might not be obvious. To be drug unwillingly from the solitude into the raucous, sin laden hell of the cities is a shock. The culture of the cities is disgusting. Others from the same background as you might welcome the life and thrive.
The radicals reject the city ways. Most of Islam find the life better and acceptable. They like it. That is the difference.
I’ll cite one example that might convey the complexity of dealing with large rapid change. In Al Khobar, Pepsi Cola Road no less, there is evening prayer time. The Faithful cease their activity and pray. Some go to a mosque, others stop beside the hiway, sort out where Mecca is and make their prayers. Business stops. Filipinos selling pizza at Domino’s lock the store and sit on the street curb until it is over. That is typical of most foreigners, they must wait.
Down the street a ways, the bank is closed and empty....... except for the automatic teller. The door into the small room where there are auto tellers remains open. Robots don’t pray. Those using the robots are sinning by doing business during prayer time but that sin is on them, not the bank. Developing accepted societal norm of dealing with prayer time exhibits but one of many many such challenges to faith and to custom.
To seek one cause is in my view, not to misunderstand, but to stop avoiding the fundamental issue and cut to the heart of the matter.
The single most important cause single cause, the single event that has produced the devolution, the single cause that has resulted in societal change in Europe or the United States, and Japan, and other countries, and is a step in the suicide of civilizations everywhere throughout history, is the acceptance of women’s rights and the move from a patriarchal society to a matriarchy.
Sorting it all out is not all that hard, but as you said, coping is quite difficult.
