WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Department of Agriculture is defending the use of ammonium-treated beef, dubbed "pink slime" by detractors, in meals destined for schoolchildren as part of the national school lunch program.

The Internet news source The Daily reported this week that 7 million pounds (3.2 million kg) of the product -- beef trimmings treated partly with ammonium hydroxide to fight contamination -- would appear in school lunches this spring.

"All USDA ground beef purchases must meet the highest standards for food safety," the agency said in a statement.

You really think we’re buying the meat on the “cheap”?? Bet we’re paying twice as much...first the price of the meat...second...the “subsidies”.

Fair point. I probably should have said “cheap for the manufacturers”, not cheap for the taxpayers footing the bill for these “lunches”, lol.

Is this where the term ‘schmaltz’ comes from?

Right now my freezers are stuffed with whitetail deer, mule deer, axis deer, elk, Oryx and the wife and I are headed out next weekend to take a nice fallow deer and a couple of turkey's. We've got catfish, crappie and fixing to add some redfish flounder and sea trout to the other freezer here in a couple of months. Still have a couple of dozen quail and 3 sandhill cranes just to cover the poultry part. We do our own processing and packaging. About the only thing we buy at the store is vegetables. It has nothing to do with processed meat or pink slime it's just what we like. She likes to hunt and fish and so do I and we just eat what we like. Oh I still pick up a couple of nice New York strips every now and then but we prefer wild game.

They just don’t understand that there is no point in defending it. They lost the battle the minute that the phrase “pink slime” was coined and published. Can’t put that genie back in the bottle Obama!

He’s been beaten by the same emotionally based propaganda tactics that the left has been turning on their enemies for years, just this time they happened to get caught in the crossfire. Of course, he’s too tone deaf and full of hubris to realize that he can’t spin his way out of this one.

Cafeteria burritos were awesome,

Best I have ever eaten. Cut one open and big chunks of beef would run out all over the plate. Course you burped them all day, but that was the only way to keep the girls off of me.

It’s a bit different than those examples. Hotdogs, etc, are made with offal and off-cuts that people wouldn’t normally buy in other forms, but they are not made by the same process as “pink slime”. This is a new process that has only been around for a few years.

Heat doesn’t kill the prions, and neither does the ammonia treatment they use to to kill all the E. Coli and Salmonella in the crap they sweep up off the slaughterhouse floor to put in the slime.

>>Wonder if the thousands of cows that go into making “Soylent Pink” will cause mad cow disease... heat doesn’t kill the stuff...<<

Ammonia gas does. That’s why it’s run through Ammonia gas.
