That's where the principal made his mistake. Never ever fire an employee for the obvious reasons. This was a substitute which means his work days depended upon the secretary to call him to offer him the day of work. Easy enough to just not call him and he'd have eventually found other more reliable employment. Now, the school has paid tax dollars to the legal problems and are now stuck with him.

I seem to recall a Florida (IIRC) teacher being fired for ‘moonlighting’ as a bikini babe on fishing expeditions.
