Clean Energy report released by Senator Reid outlines Nevada's winning strategy and highlights SolarReserve's Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project

United States Senator Harry Reid released a new report today that puts a bright spotlight on the importance and benefits of federal and state policies to support the development of renewable energy sources.

"We are proud to be a leading example in Senator Reid's Nevada Clean Energy Report that demonstrates how public-private partnerships create jobs and economic growth for the local community and state," said Kevin Smith, CEO of SolarReserve. "Clearly, SolarReserve's Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project that is currently under construction near Tonopah, Nevada, could not have gone forward without supportive public policies and the leadership of Senator Reid and other members of congress and the administration."

As the report states, the 110 megawatt Crescent Dunes solar thermal energy project near Tonopah will be capable of generating electricity to power more than 43,000 homes (75,000 homes during peak project operations). One hundred percent of the electricity generated by the project will be sold to NV Energy under a 25-year contract, providing Nevada's largest utility with clean, reliable energy at stable prices that will be unaffected by volatility in oil, natural gas or coal prices. In addition, SolarReserve's innovative U.S.-developed energy storage technology can store the sun's energy for an entire day to generate electricity when needed, without interruption after the sun goes down or during cloudy periods – even 24 hours a day.

Critical to the need to diversify Nevada's economy, the project will directly employ more than 600 workers on site during peak construction activities, nearly all being Nevada residents. Construction of the facility began in September of 2011, with the solar power tower portion of the project completed in December 2011. To date, there have been more than 100 workers on site so far with local Nevadans comprising 81 percent of the construction workforce. Commercial operation is scheduled for the end of 2013.

Nevada-based companies have made up 80 percent of the on-site contractors thus far, including union and non-union firms. When accounting for offsite services and supply, more than 4,300 direct, indirect and induced jobs will be created at companies throughout the U.S. that provide engineering, equipment supply and manufacturing, transportation and other value-added services. To date, orders for the project have been placed for equipment and services in more than 20 states across the U.S.

As Senator Reid's report points out, SolarReserve's project has helped Nevada rank third nationally for utility-scale solar projects under development. The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is now the world's most advanced solar thermal energy technology. In addition to the ability to store the sun's energy for use during peak electricity demand periods, the project will generate almost two times the electricity in kilowatt-hours than that generated by a similarly sized photovoltaic (PV) or competing direct-to-steam solar thermal energy technologies.

With an investment of nearly $1 billion, this project could not have been built without federal policy programs to support renewable energy advancement and implementation. The project completed full financing in September of 2011, utilizing the Department of Energy's Loan Guarantee program along with more than $250 million in private equity investment from SolarReserve, ACS Cobra, a worldwide leader in the engineering and construction of power plants and thermal solar facilities, and Santander, a global financial services and banking leader. Nevada's Renewable Portfolio Standard, requiring that the state generate 25 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2025, has been critical in attracting companies like SolarReserve to the state.

Once operational, the project will expend more than $10 million per year in salaries and operating costs, and is forecasted to generate $47 million in tax revenues through the first 10 years of operation - contributing to workers' paychecks, service businesses, local school systems and police and fire departments.

"We recognize that not everyone in Washington supports the advancement of clean energy," said Smith. "Given the limitations of fossil fuel generated electricity – both with respect to supply and impact on the environment – it is vital that policies to support renewable energy continue. These policies are important for building additional projects, continued job growth, reducing pollution, competing in the global marketplace and realizing energy security for the United States."

About SolarReserve

SolarReserve, LLC – headquartered in Santa Monica, Calif. – is a solar energy project development company developing large-scale solar energy projects worldwide. It holds the exclusive worldwide license to the molten salt, solar power tower technology developed by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, a subsidiary of Connecticut-based United Technologies Corporation. Since its formation in late 2007, SolarReserve's team of power project professionals have assembled a concentrated solar power development portfolio of more than 25 projects featuring its licensed solar power technology with potential output of more than 3,000 megawatts in the United States and Europe; with early stage activities in other international markets including the Middle East, North and South Africa, Australia, China, India and Latin America. SolarReserve is also developing 1,100 MW of photovoltaic projects across the Western United States, and is actively acquiring new sites to add to the pipeline in the U.S. and overseas. SolarReserve's experienced management team has previously developed and financed more than $15 billion in renewable and conventional energy projects in more than a dozen countries around the world.

SolarReserve's molten salt, concentrating solar power tower technology was successfully demonstrated in California under a U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored pilot project in the late 1990s. The 10 MW pilot facility utilized a molten salt receiver designed, engineered and assembled by Rocketdyne, now a part of United Technologies Corporation.

More companies that would not exist without subsidies that add nothing to the economy except donating to the libs.

Well you see this aint built yet. So they really don’t know ho much energyit will put out. Right now they are justguessing-—and guessing high because they want more federal money.

You see Las vegas already gets cheap electricity from the Hoover damn Hudro electric project and Nevad is loade with useless land in a desert, that they can build these solar panels.

In years to come we will se how they hold up, and how much energy they will really produce and at what expense for the initial building. Harry is bragging now, we will have to wait and see how long he can brag. Right now he has brought a lot of money into Nevada at our expense.

According to a Daily Caller article about SolaReserve:

Additionally, Federal Election Commission records made available by the Center for Responsive Politics show that SolarReserve board member James McDermott has contributed $61,500 to various Democratic campaigns since 2008, including $30,800 to Obama’s presidential election campaign.

McDermott’s U.S. Renewable Energy Group has a significant financial stake in SolarReserve, and has drawn scrutiny for its ties with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — and for reportedly driving green jobs to China.

And Lee Bailey, a fellow SolarReserve board member and U.S. Renewables Group investor, has donated $21,850 since 2008 to Democratic candidates including President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, California Sen. Barbara Boxer and then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

SolarReserve’s board of directors also includes Jasandra Nyker of Pacific Corporate Group Asset Management, where former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law, Ronald Pelosi, holds a leadership position.

Other data from the Center for Responsive Politics show that SolarReserve paid $100,000 in lobbying fees in 2009 to the Podesta Group. That firm’s principal, Tony Podesta, is the brother of John Podesta — who ran Barack Obama’s presidential transition team.

SolarReserve’s financials are not public since it’s a privately held company, but First Solar provides a more transparent example. That solar energy firm’s stock has lost more than $100 in value since it peaked at $170.80 on Feb. 17, 2011. The company was trading at $65.77 per share Wednesday afternoon.

This market tumble came despite First Solar’s success in winning approximately $2.1 billion in loan guarantees from the Department of Energy. The company announced Wednesday that it would not be able to qualify for a further $1.5 billion loan guarantee before the Sept. 30 deadline.

So, what we have, if the Daily Caller info is correct, is yet ANOTHER version of the Solyndra payoff to Obama supporters.

And, the disingenuous, biased media (DBM) want us to believe that conservatives are the crooks!!!

public-private partnerships

Hmmmm......

ECONOMIC FASCISM

The AFL-CIO has echoed this theme, advocating a ``tripartite National Reindus- trialization Board including representatives of labor, business, and government'' that would supposedly ``plan'' the economy.22 The Washington, D.C.-based Center for National Policy has also published a report authored by businessmen from Lazard Freres, du Pont, Burroughs, Chrysler, Electronic Data Systems, and other corporations promoting an allegedly ``new'' policy based on ``cooperation of government with business and labor.''23 Another report, by the organization ``Rebuild America,'' co-authored in 1986 by Robert Reich and economists Robert Solow, Lester Thurow, Laura Tyson, Paul Krugman, Pat Choate, and Lawrence Chimerine urges ``more teamwork'' through ``public-private partnerships among government, business and academia.''24 This report calls for ``national goals and targets'' set by government planners who will devise a ``comprehensive investment strategy'' that will only permit ``productive'' investment, as defined by government, to take place.

In other words, this venture will be gone by 2013. All the investors will be out with 100% return plus bonus, all kickbacks paid to the Obama campaign, all workers let go and no one to blame but a Republican administration which will be replaced with Democrats in 2014 because of this.

And on and on and on.

the 110 megawatt Crescent Dunes solar thermal energy project near Tonopah

Liars.

110 MW and what is the capacity factor?

Deduct 50% because it is dark 50% of the time.

Then deduct 5% for cloud cover.

Then deduct 5% for dirty surfaces, equipment outages.

So 110 MW becomes 44 MW.

The typical 110 MW coal burning plant they shutdown probably was on 85% of the time if allowd to or 90 MW.

So figure that the per megawatt cost is double the already doubled cost.

Liars.

Squander and Launder.

Nevada better take credit for these renewable energy boondoggles before they go belly up and all the workers are laid off, like has happened in every other state.

Even their lies are lies. 110MW for 43,000 homes gives them each about 2.5KWH. When I was looking for a generator, I calculated I'd need one with a capacity of about 7.5KWH just to maintain a semblance of normal life.

Of course -- as usual --, the press release says nothing about how much power the project generates after sunset.

Perhaps it’s time one of our soon to be re-elected useless Congresscritters could file impeachment charges against The Won for using the US Treasury as his own personal piggy bank for throwing all of these TAXPAYER dollars at companies owned, operated and/or run by cronies and supporters of his.

This amounts to the gross misuse of public funds, IMO, and Obama should either have to pay it all back, or spend a year in prison for every single dollar he threw away at these failed companies. That should give his dried up bones a place to rest for the next few millenia.

His “wife” (co-conspirator) and kids can share the cell next to him and help him pay it off sooner.
