The iPad Is Unbeatable: Why Apple’s tablet competitors don’t stand a chance—and maybe never will

Imagine you run a large technology company not named Apple. Let’s say you’re Steve Ballmer, Michael Dell, Meg Whitman, Larry Page, or Intel’s Paul Otellini. How are you feeling today, a day after Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the new iPad? Are you discounting the device as just an incremental improvement, the same shiny tablet with a better screen and faster cellular access? Or is it possible you had trouble sleeping last night? Did you toss and turn, worrying that Apple’s new device represents a potential knockout punch, a move that will cement its place as the undisputed leader of the biggest, most disruptive new tech market since the advent of the Web browser? Maybe your last few hours have been even worse than that. Perhaps you’re now paralyzed with confusion, fearful that you might be completely boxed in by the iPad—that there seems no good way to beat it.

For your sake, my hypothetical CEO friend, I hope you’re frightened.

Don't turn your back on that thing.

They told me the iPad I was going to kill the netbooks. You've got one of them zombie netbooks!

I’m doing fine with the Galaxy Nexus as a phone. Fits in my hand just fine. I doubt the iPhone ever goes as big because of the hit to the battery pushing a 720p phone with a 4.6 inch causes. However, a move to a 4 inch screen seems likely.

I’ve decided that I’m just going to sign my paycheck over to Apple. In return, all I ask is that they send me each new gadget as it is released and send me enough food so that I can stay alive to keep pushing those buttons and sliding my finger up and down those screens.

Word is...when new iPad tablet computers go on sale Friday, they won't be equipped with Sharp Corp.'s liquid-crystal-display panels because of a delay in the Japanese electronics maker's delivery, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The idea is that nobody buys a PC unless someone else is forcing them to do it.

I did not say that either, why are you trying so hard to defend something that does not need defending?

The truth is when M$ ruled, It departments would tolerate nothing else, so people that needed a computer bought home computers that were compatible with what they used at work. You can not deny that. Add to that the apparent price differential and it just became the defacto standard.

Apple products are now not automatically denied by IT departments, maybe because of the iPad I don't know, but I am sure it had an influence.

The point I was making is when people truly have a choice they are buying Apple products, the problem was you interpreted people as "all people" when it is patently absurd to draw that conclusion.

By what you want this is still America, at least for a while longer.

MS “ruled” the enterprise because Apple didn’t give a crap about it, and largely still doesn’t.

My netbook is one tough cookie - Win-7 64 bit, 4 gig of RAM, 500 gig HD, dual-core processor. It's got a little horsepower. Plus, I have its flank protected by my old netbook which sports Linux (for experimental purposes only).

I'm actually pretty happy with this netbook, and I don't see any significant problems that an iPad might resolve.
