Murder in Afghanistan
American Spectator ^ | Mar. 12 2012 | Ross Kaminsky

With Sunday's news that a US soldier massacred 16 Afghan civilians, mostly women and children, in their sleep and then burned the bodies, the little that the US can claim to have achieved in Afghanistan, at great cost over a decade, is now likely to be lost.

No American, and probably no westerner, will be safe in Afghanistan for a decade after the soldier's murderous rampage. Really, if they're willing to murder people over burned books, imagine the intensity of Afghan hatred for a truly heinous crime against sleeping civilians, with one man losing all 11 members of his family.

Although speculation is pointless, the first thing that comes to mind, especially with reports that this soldier is a sergeant (rather than a lower-ranked soldier) is revenge against Afghanistan for the murder of multiple US soldiers by Afghans following the recent burning of a few Korans by American soldiers.

Although I understand a soldier's desire for vengeance against a nation which demands apologies for singed books but offers none for murder, this soldier's actions are obviously beyond sanction and deserving of the death penalty -- even if he claims insanity.

As is his wont, President Obama has already apologized to the president of Afghanistan, who has said that the murders "cannot be forgiven." While I understand Karzai's feelings, and would likely share them, it is a distinctly unhelpful line of rhetoric from the nation's leader if he actually cared about maintaining any even superficially friendly relationship with the United States.

The fact that he said what he said means he is more concerned with domestic politics than with his "alliance" with the United States. That focus is all the easier when dealing with a US president who projects weakness and fecklessness at every opportunity, ...

We aren't there so Americans and Westerners can be safe there. We are there because they harbored the animals who masterminded an attack on our country. They paid a price for welcoming the Taliban. What that damaged soldier did is appalling. But as long as those people are under the sway of their obscene religion, things aren't going to get any better regardless of what we do or fail to do. Bar any more of them from coming here. Bring our soldiers home, bring home all of our equipment and treasure, cut off their welfare and let the strongest predator take them over. That predator can assume the fight, the financing, and face the same thing we're facing right now. None of them are fit to live in civilized societies. They should be isolated from civilization, forbidden to travel to western countries and allowed to fight it our amongst themselves.

Everything Obastard does is with an eye how it will get him re-elected. He doesn’t care how many soldiers are killed to prop up the incredibly corrupt Karzai government. After we leave, it won’t stand a year.

Tell me why the doctors sent this guy back knowing he had brain injury? he served FOUR TOURS! IMO it is the doctors that should be court martialed. This man was sick and they damn well knew it.

Just how are they supposed to calculate what he might do? Premonition, Voodoo? They would have us all locked up because of uncertainty to meet your standards.

One of the many virtues of hypocrisy is the convenience of another man’s tragedy.

IIRC, he turned himself in. He’ll get his trial.

You make a good point about the lop-sided ROE, I’d thought of that too, upon reading the initial reports yesterday.

Maybe this is a dumb question, and maybe I have missed the revelation, but why are we not being told who this guy is? What his name is?

What’s the deal with that?!

I have asked the same. Either we are protecting his family, or he is a Muslim.

It seems if he were Muslim, it would be good to get that out their because it might calm the natives a little to know the murders were at the hands of one of their fellow barbarians.

Anyway, it is odd that we know he is a Sgt., where he served, and his time in Iraq, but we haven’t heard his name.

He’s not a Muslim. His name is withheld until formal charging to protect his rights and his family.

This is a terrible, terrible event.

Anyone who does not think the US owes an apology to these families, this village and this country is beyond my level of understanding.

This guy walked out of the gate and undertook massacre against women and children. In their beds sleeping. Not on a battlefield, but in a village. All on his own. I don't know a single current military, or ex military that thinks this is anything besides premeditated murder.

Of COURSE he needs medical evaluation and potentially treatment. Of COURSE this should remain under the control of the US Army...in all stages.

But if found sane, he must be hung or placed in front of a firing squad.

And, we need to withdraw from Afghanistan within 60 days from today.

I'm still waiting to get the details on this guy. We heard he had a head injury. Ok. But what's his name. If it's Mahmoud, that may tell us something.

Apologies should be given privately....we don't need the POTUS doing it in front of the rest of the world.

Thanks FSE, that makes sense. I don’t know if you have more information.

It is a very terrible event.

He’s a staff sergeant from the Stryker Brigade at Ft. Lewis. Name isn’t being released. His unit served three deployments to Iraq, but we don’t know if he was there for all three. The man should not have been in Afghanistan. He had served his country well and just went over the edge.

Because not all news travels through the media. For obvious reasons I'll divulge no details until the official announcements come out.

At face value, if what you’re saying is true...I will agree, that Obama should be torn to shreds for this.....you know damn well if Bush was President, it would be Abu Ghraib times 1000.

From my observation, the rioting is typically after Friday afternoon mosque services, when the news is spread by imams along with the exhortations of what to do. Many Afghans may not know while others are waiting for approval of collective violence.
