After Wins, Santorum Says It's Time 'For Conservatives To Pull Together' [Has "Burst of Momentum"]

After Wins, Santorum Says It's Time 'For Conservatives To Pull Together'

By Michael Finnegan and John Hoeffel Los Angeles Times March 13, 2012 — Rick Santorum scored two major victories in his insurgent campaign for the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday, winning the Alabama and Mississippi primaries and dealing a potentially crippling blow to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

With most of the votes tallied, Gingrich was running second in both states, followed closely by Mitt Romney.

The twin losses for Gingrich, who devoted a full week to zigzagging across the two states by bus, effectively crushed his effort to resuscitate his candidacy in the South, notwithstanding his vow Tuesday night to press forward.

For Santorum, the victories in the heart of the Republican Party's Deep South stronghold could help establish him as its lone conservative alternative to Romney. Having now won 10 contests in states spanning the nation, Santorum heads into the next round of contests in Missouri, Illinois and Louisiana with a burst of momentum.

"We did it again!" the former Pennsylvania senator told cheering supporters at a celebration in Lafayette, La.

Only Romney had little to lose in Alabama and Mississippi. The former Massachusetts governor, whose talk of eating grits and catfish proved to be awkward overtures to locals, called Tuesday's contests an "away game," forgoing the formality of an election-night party in Alabama or Mississippi to travel to New York City for fundraisers this week.

Are they using carrier pigeons out there to get the tabulations in? You wait 10 minutes to get one precinct in that adds like 20 or 30 votes. SOOOOO SLOWWWWWW.

Everyone must be on island time or something.

It's true that Ohio is a must win state, the minute the kenyan communist won it in 2008, it was all over.

The communists in effect stole it, they tried in 2004 but were stopped by Ken Blackwell.

Newt was scorned as a womanizer long before Santorum became a factor in this race.

I’m certain a Newt supporter but will accept Rick as the alternative.

And yes, I objectified his candidacy.

My thing.

I’m certain a Newt supporter but, Rick blunts Romney as does Newt.

I’m fine with this outcome even if my guy didn’t come out on top.

Newt will have a voice at convention and I hope mine is included.

Show me a true Conservative and I’ll pull in behind him and push him to a win. I don’t see a true Conservative right now in the race.

'Sweater Vest certainly has an ability to get democrats to vote for him in open primary states, I’ll give him that. "

Does Newt wear a sweater vest?

The (only) 2 states Newt won were both open primaries.

Santorum has won 5 states that had closed primaries, and has won 4 states with open primaries.

WOW. Rick is keeping within 100 votes of Romney and within 4% with half the vote in. I need some sleep now. I hope when I wake up there was some sort of miracle that he pulled this off.

Give that guy a cigar. Finally a light bulb shines it’s light on the forum.

No Conservatives this time around. Who knew?

Absolutely right. Now do we keep our vital interests in Obama’s hands?

NO!!!!!!!

It will probably be a Romney win, but not by a landslide, but by a hair, and then a strong anti-Romney vote in the majority in Hawaii; same story all night, same story all season. THE PARTY DOES NOT WANT ROMNEY AS NOMINEE!!!

I should add here that the vote gap between Rick and Paul is good and safe, and the vote gap between Paul and Gingrich also pretty level. Things have changed since you last looked at that post of mine. It is this gap between Romney and Santorum for first place in Hawaii that I am watching closely. At one time it was 56 vote gap, now 100 votes, all of Maui is in (Romne one), about 1/2 of Hawaii (Big Island) is in, Romney leading, and Oahu has some bit to go, with Romney slightly ahead. And mean while, in Kauai, I guess they have gone to bed without counting votes. Manana, mon. Da kine.

AIT -
OK, you made me laugh.,,

It’s at 34-30% Mitt/Rick with 51% counted. Impossible to tell which votes have been counted. Give us a break - we’ve never done this before. Paper ballots and hand counting!

But I had a festive time standing in line with my fellow Repulicans. Everybody was happy to actually get a chance to have their opinion matter at the ballot box.Checked out the long line and no Mormons in sight - I can spot ‘em! Of course, they would be at other districts.

Voted for Rick. He’s doing far better than I expected. Nice.

He wasn’t a womanizer. All the slurs and smears about adultery originated with left-wing publications, trying to divert attention away from Clinton’s impeachment for perjury.

We shall see what the morrow brings, but I for one am sick of the circular firing squad.

Ya but when it is a bunch of idiots who cares. I am so cynical of this race, the only one I can pull the lever for is Newt at this point, Rick ain't got the chops for it, and I grew up in Mass, need I say more?

Look, 2 Seniors in my circle of friends have noted the following; One said he is hoping for a brokered convention and as a Jew he is getting fonder of Palin everyday. The 2nd that said she didn't have a chance, but was all in a lather on the phone yesterday about how to get Reelz and see "The Undefeated"....

You tell me what is going on?

IMHO Buyers Remorse over what they have to choose from, and all the poo-pooing they did in regards to Sarah

She gets up on the podium @ the convention and speaks her mind all bets are off IMHO. Problem is the Weasels in the EGOP will do everything to stop it.

Newt / Palin ? works for me....
