After Wins, Santorum Says It's Time 'For Conservatives To Pull Together'

By Michael Finnegan and John Hoeffel Los Angeles Times March 13, 2012 — Rick Santorum scored two major victories in his insurgent campaign for the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday, winning the Alabama and Mississippi primaries and dealing a potentially crippling blow to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

With most of the votes tallied, Gingrich was running second in both states, followed closely by Mitt Romney.

The twin losses for Gingrich, who devoted a full week to zigzagging across the two states by bus, effectively crushed his effort to resuscitate his candidacy in the South, notwithstanding his vow Tuesday night to press forward.

For Santorum, the victories in the heart of the Republican Party's Deep South stronghold could help establish him as its lone conservative alternative to Romney. Having now won 10 contests in states spanning the nation, Santorum heads into the next round of contests in Missouri, Illinois and Louisiana with a burst of momentum.

"We did it again!" the former Pennsylvania senator told cheering supporters at a celebration in Lafayette, La.

Only Romney had little to lose in Alabama and Mississippi. The former Massachusetts governor, whose talk of eating grits and catfish proved to be awkward overtures to locals, called Tuesday's contests an "away game," forgoing the formality of an election-night party in Alabama or Mississippi to travel to New York City for fundraisers this week.

The MSM might be right about the lack of intelligence of Republican candidates, which is only surpassed by that of the conservative voters. We had a chance to nominate a brilliant, articulate, and vastly experienced person. He has written multiple books, has a doctorate, taught war college, blah, blah, blah. But, oh no!!!!! He has been married three times, and sat on a couch with Nancy Pelosi. Oh the humanity.

However, I find it very off putting by Newt only supporters with their constant put downs of Rick - such as sweater vest.

...as well as the scurrilous attacks on his religious faith and his concern about the breakdown of the American family. All the "St. Rick" and "Reverend Rick" name calling is just ridiculous.

Yes, it’s time for Conservatives to pull together, but, it’s also time for Rick to concentrate his message on the Economy, Energy (gas prices) and Foreign Policy. He must NOT allow the media to drag him back in to talking about contraceptives and he must go light on the Social Issues to prove that he is not a “Johnny-one-note” candidate.

Per the Exit Polling, only 4% of the people identified themselves as Democrats. We don’t know who that 4% voted for.

No way a guy who voted to force workers to join a union and pay dues against their will in order to work can be called a conservative. He's a fraud ____________________________________________________________ Well then, Rome2000, we MUST destroy him. Yes; we must make sure that if he is the nominee he will go into the November General Election beaten, bruised and battered so that Obama will kick his ass and keep him out of the White House. Yessir, out of 1600 votes he cast as a Senator, that one disqualifies him. Let's stop his ass NOW. We need four more years of Comrade Obama.
(Do I really need the "sarc" tag?)

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe Santorum doesn’t have a clue about the economy, energy or foreign policy? Seems to me if he had a grasp on these issues he would have some ideas of his own and brought them forward instead he mimicked Newt. Could it be that the only topic he is comfortable with IS contraceptives and religion?

Santo’s two tier tax policy and special tax for manufacturing (union) jobs tells me he is a compromised candidate as well as not having a good grasp of economics. Somebody wasted a lot of money on a law degree and a MBA when their root cause analysis always points to the problem as “sin”.

“Actually, Newt does continually get scorned as a womanizer by the Santorumites here”

Isn’t it weird how Newt has all these great ideas and could really get the country back on the right track but is scorned and thought of as a weasel for womanizing and yet Clinton was a weasel and womanizing, liar, etc. and was adored by the left?

“it was a big loss for Newt”

By far, I prefer Newt over Santorum, but it isn’t going to happen for him. In order to thwart Romney, Newt has to put the country before his ego. Between his ego and Geriatric Barbie’s determination to be First Lady, we’re screwed. I was “iffy” on the Romney thing for a while, but when he had to hire a coach to instruct him on “conservative speak”, he was done for me. Call me crazy, but I’d like my president to have conservatism in his heart; not on flashcards.

You’re joking, right? Newt wins the nomination when my pet pig learns to sing.

He would make a good Secretary of State, however..and I hope that(or something similar) is what Santorum offers him in order to get Newt to DROP OUT NOW and join forces with him to take Romney out at the knees.

That’s right arasina. Vote for the liberal pro abortion, pro homo moderate from Massachusetts OR Newt who can’t win OR the crazy uncle who can’t win.

That’s good reasoning.

Oh, you are right about one thing, Obama is indeed laughing, especially at the thought of having Santorum to run against.
