Man the torpedoes, full steam ahead! Let God guide this ship and to hell with being overly concerned about people's feelings.

And your point is???? I was a Newt guy, until it became obvious that he’s not gonna win, so I switched to Santorum to stop RINO-Rom. But, what has Newt’s statement got to do with Rick letting his mouth write out a check his ass can’t cover? BTW, Newt is on record FAVORING Statehood for Puerto Rico.

So what. I oppose it. But if they do become a state they damn well better start learning to speak English which is the point. Why you people favor the balkinazation of America is beyond my capability to understand.

The republicans are not going to win the Hispanic community. Sorry, ain't gonna happen. A few, yes, but not the majority. Same with the blacks. A few, but not the majority. Unless the republicans are ready to guarantee both sections everything the dims allow them now. Other wise, no way no how.

So for the plan to work, they need Santorum to get as many votes as possible. And yet day after day they bash Rick Santorum, they call him a liberal, they do everything they can do discourage people from voting for Rick — even knowing that half the people who would vote for Rick will vote for Romney otherwise.

Sadly there are some here (Mariner being one) that have said they'd prefer Romney over Santorum. I really can't comprehend how anyone that is conservative can come to that conclusion. But libertarians, apparently, are so hostile toward Rick's stance on social issues that they believe Romney would be the better candidate.

You should read what he actually said, and what was reported, and then maybe you'd understand why he had to correct the media. Even the link you couldn't provide as an actual link shows the false narrative of the media.

What Santorum said: "Like any other state, there has to be compliance with this and any other federal law," Santorum said. "And that is that English has to be the principal language. There are other states with more than one language such as Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal language."

What Reuters reports : "Santorum wants English to be PRIMARY language".

They then claim that since the constitution doesn't mention English, that it therefore isn't something that we could force on a state. Except the constitution allows the existing states to decide whatever criteria they like to admit a new state. For example, Utah had to give up polygamy, even though it doesn't mention "no polygamy" in the constitution.

But you apparently think that if a candidate has his words misquoted and misrepresented, that they shouldn't try to correct the record. Although your original complaint was that he insisted on English. SO I'm not sure what your complaint actually is.

Ask yourself why the media would misquote him and misrepresent his point of view, and you might understand the answer to your question.

I know I don't want a new state where 80% of the people don't actually speak English.

That’s not really much of an argument for allowing it to happen again....

I can’t fault others for that, since I supported Romney in 2008 — although that was against John McCain, and Rick Santorum is more conservative than John McCain (as is Newt Gingrich).

It wasn’t just California - Louisiana in 1812, and New Mexico in 1912 were both officially bilingual according to their state constitutions.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I assume Louisiana was French and NM Spanish?

Yes. Your point? I was referring to NATIONAL Democrats who want PR to be a state or leave. Believe me, I was in the Congressional committee room as the hearing took place.

Sorry but Jersey is incorrect. Louisiana and New Mexico were both admitted on the precondition that they accept English as an official Language.

In the case of New Mexico, however, they won two concessions: Section 3 prevented discrmination against Spanish speakers serving on juries; Section 8 required Normal Schools (Teacher-education colleges) to ensure dual fluency; A third section was considered a victory for the Spanish, but actually is more like an official English bill; it forbade separate classrooms and education opportunities for children of Spanish descent. By 1953, these laws were revoked, but the 1989 “English Plus” resolution goes pretty far in mandating bilingualism, despite being labelled as an official English bill.

The only officially bilingual state is Hawaii, since 1978, which is ironic because Bi-illiteracy is now rampant, Hawai’ian is still largely extinct, and “pidgin English” and”pidgin Hawai’ian” are common on the streets.

...I believe this now makes a total of sixteen strait hours thus far of soundbites that Obama will be able to spin into negatives against Mr. Santorum if he indeed should get the GOP nod for the nomination.

Yes. Obama could safely lay off most of his campaign team. Santorum has already done their work for them.

No, he has not given Obama fodder, unless you consider the made up issues Obama uses to cover his devious plans, such as “republicans hate women because they want to keep them from their necessary birth control” instead of his obamaCare ignoring the first amendment.

States should have English as their primary language. He shouldn’t have walked it back, but he wanted to clarify. He is never ashamed to clarify what he bursts out with, and he doesn’t say anything crazy like populating the moon.

To my knowledge, while the original Louisiana constitution of 1812 required state documents to made in English, the state remained de-facto bilingual for several decades, with many state officials speaking French as their primary language. Some, even up to the rank governor, spoke no English at all. And the state government published papers in both tongues.

The state constitution of 1845 made these practices official, rather then unofficial as before, and French would have a status as a secondary language of the state, with official documents printed in both languages and bilingual schools, until the new constitution of 1921.

As for New Mexico, you are right that it wasn’t officially bilingual - government officeholders had to speak sufficient English to perform their duties without an interpreter, and English had to be taught in schools. But, due to the large numbers of provisions in the constitution regarding Spanish (such as mandating that potential constitutional amendments have to be published in both English and Spanish newspapers prior to their being voted on), I would consider it de-facto bilingual in that era.

But, the Hispanic community (Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Ricans....) they are empathetic to each other. Offend one, offend all. We need to do what’s right, but tone down the rhetoric. That’s all Marco Rubio is asking the GOP candidates to do. You don’t have to say to a mother, “You’re baby is ugly”. You can say: “Aren’t children precious?” Why do we have to intentionally alienate a huge voting bloc? If we do, we’ll get our butt handed to us again this November and Obama will have four more years to destroy this great nation.

“Shouldn’t all states have English as the official language ?”

No because english isn’t the official language of the US.

Although that should be changed the fact remains that there IS NO official language of the US.
