What was Rick Santorum thinking??? (Vanity)

Poor Rick Santorum. He goes to Puerto Rico and pisses them off by telling them they must make English the official language if they want Statehood. (See Link)

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/16/us-usa-campaign-puertorico-idUSBRE82D16Z20120316

What the hell was he thinking? Why did his handlers not brief him on this issue before he got to Puerto Rico? Republicans just cannot get it through their friggin' head that the Hispanic vote is a big chunk of votes, and all flavors of Hispanics (Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican) stick together. If he is the nominee, this will follow him all the way to November. Rick NEVER does well speaking off the cuff.

JUST DAMN!!!

And what is your point ?? Is he supposed to lie to them ? Shouldn’t all states have English as the official language ?

Should Spanish be their official language? We need English to be the official language but I guess we should all know better than to say so.

Sort of reminds me of Specter and Ebonics. He got on the bandwagon and was trying to make a lucid argument why we should accept Ebonics as readily as English. Got shouted down by the voters, put his tail between his legs, and slinked off stage.

You ever wish you could pull a "Twilight zone" and get this man running for POTUS right here right now?

"President Obama, there you go again..."

How have these people made it this far in this thing? Our country is made of better stuff than this, I know it. There’s a lot of solid, smart, clear-thinking people in our country - they must just be running away from politics which makes sense because true conservatives generally love the business of America (which is business) and hate government and politics.

Meanwhile, Romney openly pandered to the Puerto Rican audience by advocating for statehood.

Yes, I’d like to go back and grab him and myself by the scruff of the neck and say “hey, stupid, you might want to save some of that money you’re making.”

I’m with the ‘no pander’ folks. Good for Rick for saying what he believes, even though he probably shouldn’t have said anything at all.

Puerto Ricans don’t want statehood. They have a great deal just the way things are.

You have to understand Puerto Rico politics. A stable, significant majority of Puerto Ricans do not want statehood. But the Democrats crave the idea of having two more senators and several representatives from a poor, politically easy to control, liberal state. For some reason, so do idiot black-flag liberal Republicans, like Bush, McCain, et al. So the plan is to tell the Puerto Ricans, “Become a state, or be cast off to collapse into poverty as an independent pariah nation.” They’re trying to get Commonwealth status to be illegal under international law.

Santorum is simply playing up to the Commonwealth crowd, the majority of voters in Puerto Rico, in such a way as to also increase his appeal to the Republican base in other states.

Why did his handlers not brief him on this issue before he got to Puerto Rico?

He was a U.S. Senator. He doesn't need briefing on something like this, nor were were his remarks a mistake. He told them the truth. That's part of his appeal among conservatives who are sick of verbal tap dances.

People of quality won’t enter politics because they would not expect their fellow citizens to support them. People seem to vote for the very worst candidates all the time.

Wow there are so many dumb things in that. For one thing most of the 50 states don’t have English as an official language. For another most of Pr doesn’t want statehood, they get all the good benefits (protection, federal spending) and don’t have to pay income tax. Tell Pr they have to do something to be a state and you can be pretty sure that something drops to the bottom of their to do list.

It’s six or seven representatives, as Puerto Rico is about the size of KY.

Good case in point. Reagan never started out wanting to be in politics. He never really sought office so much as the office sought him. But once he made the decision to engage, he did it with all of his heart and never looked back. God bless him. I wish we had a thousand more in line just like him.

We already have GOP candidate that determines his positions based upon political expediency....why do we need another?

If someone doesn’t like the fact that GOP politicians should want English as the official language, there is another party that might suit them better.

I don’t want Puerto Rico as a state anyway. I don’t care what language they speak down there.
