Probably, since Californians voted to require English immersion as the default course. It was specifically targeted against bilingual and native language teaching - something that schools have time and time again gone out of their way to undercut and wiggle around. The school in question has parents of incoming students sign a form requesting bilingual education - a violation of the spirit of 227 which gave the exemption based upon parental action, not school action.

It is public employees covering for public employees - all those bilingual teachers would have been fired.

The parents of the students need to band together and take over the local school board and reign back in their schools. End the policy of handing this form to parents as if it were part of the educational requirement, end these bilingual classes, and return to the spirit of Prop 227 (passed by 61%) of having English immersion courses which double tests scores vs these useless bilingual courses.

Only one option is not really an option, is it?

Why do they teach classes in Spanish? This is not Spain. This is America. The language is English. Get with it or get out......

Absolutely agree. As a Hispanic, and son of a Hispanic immigrant Spanish language teacher, I can say that there is no/no advantage to bilingual education. There is only confusion. One of my high school friends arrived from Cuba as a refugee. Spoke no English when he was enrolled in high school. That fall he was on the JV football team and speaking English. By the time we graduated, he was offered a scholarship to MIT. His parents were right when they told him English was the language of success.

Well, my older girls took French in school. Never used it since graduation and have forgotten most of it.

My youngest is taking Spanish which the way things are going will help her get a job when she graduates.

Back in the day I traveled a lot I got used to being able to find someone in the remotest backwater of Africa who could speak English at least a little - and they wanted to speak a lot just so they could improve.

I think everyone should have at least a working knowledge of a second language.

But as this is America I do think that the primary language of instruction should be English.

Just my opinion - of course.

I took French and Latin when I went to high school, however, all other classes ie history, math, etc. were taught in English not English/French, not English/Latin. English is the language of this country not Spanish. If someone wants to learn Spanish on their own that's fine but it should not be forced in the schools.

Businesses should be speaking English not Spanish. I deal with companies in Florida and a lot of them are Spanish speaking only, if they can't speak English I don't do business with them. Same with CA, not only Spanish but a lot of Asian speaking businesses as well, if they can't get someone on the phone who speaks English, I hang up.

Only if it were severed between a coastal strip that includes the freak cities of SF and LA, and the more conservative inland counties, there would be hope.

But that`s not going to happen... so no. It can`t be saved. The introduction of bilingual classes appears to be a component of the transition toward CA`s eventual departure from the “United” States.

African-Americans learned to speak a sort of English, the only part of African language that survived among them was names we cannot pronounce that they take when they join Farrakhan.
Hispanic people who come here should be able to learn too.

A country with no National language is no country at all.

Learn to speak English or stay home. We need to do away with all attempts to print official forms in any other language and get that Spanish off the damned telephones.

CA is doomed for N reasons.

Where N is a very large number.

Best to let it collapse, and we can invade after it becomes a third world environment (mostly there now)...and start the civilization process all over again.

Can the U.S. be saved?

I no longer think so. I am preparing my sons to live in a socialist state. Not sure how to go about it but that's what I am preparing them for. I am going to teach them the govt is their enemy no matter what they hear.

I took Spanish in college. I actually had to use it in Hong Kong where I helped some Spanish tourists who were confused about how to take a ferry, and in Moldova where I bought some paintings from a former Soviet soldier who had been stationed in Cuba. Crazy world.

The stereotypical American tourist was based on fact when I traveled.

Most “dumb natives” I hung around with in Africa spoke their tribal language, the lingua franca of the country and had a working knowledge of English.

I was told one time my “local language” capabilities were on par with a demented 4 year old.

“Do you speak English?” “I SAID DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?” “Look Martha, the dumb native does not speak English.”

Oh, well.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Good to read a posting on immigrants and language that makes sense!
My mother immigrated to the US after WWII and immediately immersed in English. I was raised in CA and as spanish was increasingly “accepted”, she got more and more upset that it was happening.
Those who allow Hispanics, Haitians, whoever to continue to operate in this country without learning and speaking english fluently are condemning these people to a life that is marginalized...a fact.
So Lowe’s, BofA, Dora the Explorer, anything that promotes another language than english in this country - you are doing noone a favor...

Yeah, I’ve seen some pretty poor behavior, but it certainly hasn’t been limited to Americans. I lived in Namibia for a time and the Spanish (loud) and Scandinavian/German (snotty) tourists were the worst...
