Santorum Campaign Takes New Tack on Gingrich
The Caucus ^ | 3-20-12 | Seelye

Posted on 03/20/2012 8:54:14 PM PDT by VinL

The Santorum campaign appears to be taking a slightly new tack on Newt Gingrich’s continued presence in the race.

Instead of calling on Mr. Gingrich to drop out of the race, they called for Mr. Gingrich’s supporters to come to their side.

“It’s time for Gingrich supporters to get behind us if they truly want to have a conservative candidate; it’s up to Newt Gingrich to decide what his future is,” John Brabender, Mr. Santorum’s top strategist, told reporters after Mr. Santorum and a crowd of about 200 people had left the hotel ballroom here where Mr. Santorum had conceded the Illinois primary.

The Santorum campaign has been saying for weeks that Mr. Gingrich was siphoning votes from Mr. Santorum and has all but called for Mr. Gingrich to drop out.

Mr. Brabender said that Mr. Gingrich’s support was eroding and that some of his voters had already moved to Mr. Santorum, but he took a more welcoming approach than he had in the past.

“We need not only Gingrich supporters,” he said. “We would love to have Newt Gingrich be an important voice for our campaign, quite frankly. We would like to have people who are working for Gingrich to be working for us. We would like some of his fund-raising people to be working for us.”

He said those Gingrich supporters had to ask themselves if their goal was to have a conservative nominee, in which case, “it’s time to unify.”

With the Illinois loss hanging heavily in the air, Mr. Brabender stressed that the race was now an incremental one for delegates.

“People are getting too focused on winning states, and that’s not the contest anymore,” he said. “The contest is winning your share of stuff.”

Thanks I will do that and will also remind the voters in LA that Santorum voted AGAINST diverting funds from the bridge to nowhere to aid the Katrina victims.

Excellent! I am going to send that reminder tomorrow to everybody I know working the phones and in La. Freepers always make the best phone calls for Newt, they always do!

Thanks!!

We need some game-changer to turn things around. But what would that be?
************

I think you’re analysis is correct—

I think Newt’s strategy has been the same from day one— and it didn’t make for a good campaign.

In the 1st 16 debates (+/-), a poll showed that 50% who watched, considered him the clear winner- no one a close second.

That’s been his strategy— if he could just present himself- unfiltered- people would come to understand that he was the proper choice to lead the country in 2013. Rightly or wrongly, that’s what he believed.

So, his campaign having imploded in Fla- knowing right then and there- that no one could compete with Romney’s limitless funds— he sought to change the rules of engagement.

Since Romney would win through the primaries- the only alternative for Newt was to stop him from attaining the requisite majority- and create for himself another window ( in this case June through the convention) to set up an alternative national debate - where again he cold outclass his opponents, safe from Romney’s negative advertising.

Your captioned question- what will be the game changer- is just what Newt is hoping for (his only hope). Iran closing the straits, unrest in the ME, $6.00 gas over the summer— anything that would get the focus on the need for a leader and drive national interest to that potential debate.

Anyway, that’s what I think his play is.

...anything that would get the focus on the need for a leader and drive national interest to that potential debate.

you are right. Newt is counting on events intervening, his grassroots becoming more and more dedicated and effective, and finding a way to get his message out over the media, which is pretty much shutting him out now. It also helps when the Obama White House responds to him as though he were their equal... people are noticing that... I am helping them to notice that... :)

Thanks for the advance warning, so a counter narrative giving the full story can be developed ASAP to Santorum callers and to the Santorum campaign, if and when such an issue came up in Lousiana.

Like I said, thanks for the advance “G-2”, to counter, if necessary.

With all of them flawed, Romney has the money and the ground crew which gives him the upper hand.

While we talk about flaws, have you seen any flaws in that Obama guy?

LOL

Craps out last night? Please he lost a blue state. Big Deal. He will win Louisiana on Saturday. He is winning the states that count. You think Romney is going to win Illinois in November?????? No way.

Vesty really wanted the bridge to nowhere.

You know who else was a huge supporter of the Bridge when she ran for Gov? Sarah Palin. She actually mocked the fact that the bridge went "Nowhere".

Would she be disqualified as a Presidential candidate for her support of this spending?
