Gingrich: After you fit a gun rack in a Volt, ‘where do you put the deer?’

Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich returned to a favorite target, slamming the Chevrolet Volt as an impractical vehicle, while stumping on the campaign trail in Louisiana Wednesday, three days ahead of that state's primary.

"I've tried to explain this psychologically, you can't put a gun rack in a Volt," Gingrich said to supporters in Pineville, La., repeating a line of attack he used in February.

Last month, however, one Chevy driver set out to prove the former Speaker wrong by actually building a gun rack into the back of his Volt, which he documented in a video posted to YouTube.

The former House Speaker did in fact acknowledge the YouTube challenge Wednesday, but pointed out that there might be another problem with the electric car.

"Now to be honest, there's actually, after I said that a couple times, there's actually a YouTube video of guy in Atlanta, who owns a Volt, who put a gun rack in the trunk, but a friend of mine, who was a hunter down in Camilla, looked at it and said 'yeah you can get the gun rack in the trunk, but then where do you put the deer?'" said Gingrich to laughter from the audience.

Gingrich has repeatedly mocked the Volt and President Obama's plan to provide subsidies for plug-in electric cars.

"Since we're all about to run out of oil, I guess the government has to be responsible and it's a very different model," he said. "Part of that model was, of course, to force us into smaller and smaller and smaller cars, so the president likes the Volt, the Volt gets a $7,500 tax credit if you buy one."

Newt, Santorum debut Etch A Sketch props on the trail (Updated) "Newt Gingrich gleefully seized on Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom's "Etch A Sketch" comments from this morning, bringing out an Etch A Sketch as a prop on the campaign trail today.

Gingrich, via POLITICO's Ginger Gibson, called Fehrnstrom's comment a sign that the conservative movement couldn't trust Romney to stick to his positions in the fall:

"Now given everybody's fears about Gov. Romney's flip-flops, to have his communications director say publicly to all of us, if we're dumb enough to nominate him we should expect by the acceptance speech he'll move back to the left, triggers everything we should worry about," he told a crowd in Lake Charles, La.

"How many of you have ever had an Etch-a-Sketch? My children had Etch A Sketches, they were great for car rides. But you'll notice that their pictures aren't permanent, their pictures aren't locked down. You can redo it any time you want. That's the problem. If you're somebody who invents RomneyCare and at the signing ceremony you say that your closest collaborator was Teddy Kennedy, it's really hard to explain to us that you're really conservative," he continued. "And if you ran for governor saying you love gun control laws and thought that the gun control laws in Massachusetts are terrific, it's pretty hard to convince pro-second amendment folks that you can be trusted. And if you ran as a pro-choice candidate who actually wrote Planned Parenthood into RomneyCare by name it's a little tricky to convince us you're right to life. So here's Gov. Romney's staff, they don't even have the decency to wait until they get the nomination to explain to us how they'll sell us out, and I think having an Etch A Sketch as your campaign model, raises every doubt about where we're going."

UPDATE: Santorum, too, stopped at Toys R Us and bought an Etch A Sketch for campaign events, per POLITICO's Juana Summers:......

STRAPPED ON THE HOOD OF IT WITH THE ANTLERS HANGING OFF ONE SIDE AND THE HIND HOOVES OFF THE OTHER AS YOU DRIVE AROUND THE BLOCK A COUPLE OF TIMES TO IMPRESS ALL THE NEIGHBORS AND THEN GO TAKE IT OUT IN YOUR BACK YARD AND HANG IT FROM ONE OF YOUR CLOTHESLINE POSTS TO FIELD DRESS IT AFTER IT'S BEEN THERE A COUPLE OF HOURS IN THE SUN, SOAKING UP THE HEAT FROM THE ENGINE AND BATTERIES MAKING THE DRIVE HOME WITH YOU ON THE INTERSTATE.

Gee, don't these guys have any common sense at all?

butcher it first.

Good. Then put it on ice in a BIG cooler and then what? There would be NO room in the Volt for that cooler.

Sanctimonium doing what he does best, stealing Newt's ideas, words, thoughts and plans... It is really getting pathetic... really. I actually thought he's be too embarrassed to do this outrightly, he usually steals Newt's stuff on the sly, but I guess you can never think too little of Santorum...

It would have to be strapped to the hood, somehow. Your view would be obstructed though.

That's not really a concern.

The Volt won't make it as far as the deer lease nor will it get 40 feet beyond the gate.

If you managed to strap a deer to the volt and get it home.
Povided you have enough charge. There’s a 50/50 chance the Volt will catch on fire. Then you could have a $40k barb-b-qued venison.

“Since we’re all about to run out of oil”

Certainly said with total sarcasm, since in his speeches now he overwhelms audiences with facts on HOW MUCH OIL this country is awash in, and a lot of times he overwhelms them with those facts IN ND ALONE.

I can imagine the tone, I don’t even need to be there.

LOL! I love “the cheerful one” and by the time you get the gun rack, passenger(s) and deer in the car...your legs may be up to your chin.
Reminds me of the how many people can fit in a telephone booth or a volkswagon.
YOU may just get a “JOLT” from the volt.

I think LIBERALS who own Volts need to show solidarity with deer and “get in Newt’s face.”

Some enterprising CONSERVATIVE should market Bambi decals and sell them to Democrats (they like to load their cars up with stickers to let everyone know how good they are and how bad we are).

A dolt put a gun rack in a Volt. I don’t get it. I’ll be honest, I really want one of the smart cars, because they’re just appealing. I’ll bet their a blast to drive. However, since I can’t put a bicycle rack on it, and put a weekend’s worth of gear in it, I’ll stick with my Explorer.

They've quoted his "etch-a-sketch" admonition at the source. It's very dark and depressing...

Newt is the "cheerful" one (as I recall, Rick labeled himself "courage").
