TORONTO – Some media ethics experts are now questioning scrubbing the story about President Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia Obama, vacationing in Mexico.

The White House’s Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, admitted to asking media not to report on the vacation. The request prompted some websites (including the Huffington Post) on Tuesday to remove reports about the trip, according to American reports.

“From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest.

We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls,” said a White House statement.

Reports on Monday detailed Malia’s vacation, including how many secret service agents were with her, where she was staying and what sightseeing destination she was going to take in.

Things obviously changed on Tuesday afternoon when a 7.6 earthquake hit the region near Acapulco in the state of Guerrero, which shares a border with Oaxaca. The White House quickly released this statement:

“In light of today’s earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger.”

The Obama administration does ask that news outlets suppress news.

I wish a real reporter would ask why it was ok for Malia to go to a country we consider dangerous after asking citizens not to travel there. I understand the need for security for their daughters, however, I question the judgement of allowing a 12 year old to go anywhere on a spring break trip without her parents.

I still say that it is ridiculous to allow a 13 year old to go on a foreign jaunt without parental supervision.

I would have hoped, at the very least they would have said...

“In light of today’s earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama and her classmates are safe and were never in danger.”

but maybe that's just me...

It is a Sidwell Friends school trip. Spring break abroad is a routine thing at Sidwell. We know one of the other girls on the trip. Routine. For Sidwell.

“The Obama administration does ask that news outlets suppress news.”

That’s only fair, the same respect should be given to the obama family as was given to President & Laura Bush and their two daughters.

I must add to this “suppress news” request of obama’s applies (only) to the obama children!

I have no problem with this

Leave the children out of it

Just like the media did with the Bush twins...

Aren’t there chaperons? Usually there are teachers and/or other parents on these types of trips. She has a security detail. She probably has chaperons as well.

Spring break abroad is a routine thing at Sidwell.

The issue here is that, in a previous article on this trip, the trip was described as a vacation for Malia, 13, and 12 of her friends along with 25 secret service agents at an exclusive resort in Mexico. This is the same Mexico that OUR state dept. warned spring breakers to avoid because of the danger.

Whether it is routine for this school or not, it is NOT routine for the American taxpayer to have to pick up the costs of 13 girls (one of whom is a president's daughter!) renting out an exclusive resort in Mexico with NO parental supervision (SS agents excluded) during a period that the state department declared dangerous to American citizens.

The problem is that, in light of all the other issues surrounding this president and his expensive lifestyle, this doesn't come across as a "routine" experience for the school, but another extravagence on the part of this president who sees the US treasury as his own personal piggy bank.

The Obamas could have been responsible and decided that Malia could set an example for her rich, spoiled schoolmates when the country is in a major recession and allowed her to vacation somewhere in America! Instead, they chose to prove that they, their daughters and their daughters schoolmates are all part of the 1%!!
