Obama's Keystone XL Visit A Potemkin Village Photo-Op
IBD Editorials ^ | March 21, 2012

Politics: The president stages a photo-op in Oklahoma to take credit for the portion of the Keystone XL pipeline that doesn't need his approval and for oil production on private and state lands beyond his jurisdiction.

If one of his aides some morning remarked on a particularly lovely sunrise, it wouldn't surprise us if President Obama responded with a "thank you," so gifted is he in taking credit for successes that he has nothing to do with and that occur despite, not because, of his policies.

So it will be Thursday, when Obama is scheduled to appear in Cushing, Okla., known as the pipeline capital of the world, to take credit for the southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline, a project announced weeks ago by TransCanada, the Keystone builder.

It's the section that doesn't need presidential or State Department approval since it does not cross an international boundary.

The part that does require State Department approval and a presidential blessing, and which holds as much as 24 billion barrels of oil, runs from the rich oil sands of Alberta, past the booming oil fields of the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota and down to Cushing. It is the portion Obama killed in January.

He killed it, Obama says, because those rascally Republicans tried to make a political issue out of gas prices and were trying to "rush" approval of a project without giving him time to study it further.

This, despite the fact that the project had already been studied for three years. Environmental concerns that had already been addressed by TransCanada's rerouting of the pipeline around sensitive aquifers needed to be addressed, Obama claims.

I can assure you that Obozo DID NOT fool the OKies in Cushing. My friends in OK loath Obozo as much and possibly more than I do. That is saying a lot.

Newsflash: He wasn’t playing to the Okies. They were just the backdrop for his photo-op. Smile!!

When O killed the pipeline, they said they would build it south to north as a way of getting around him. So he takes credit for it.

He has announced that he is opening the coastlines to drilling a couple of times now, but of course his people never actually issue the permits. If I remember correctly, he had approved some offshore drilling in Alaska and then quietly stopped it. Nothing is ever as it seems if you just look at what he says. If you know who he is, however, you always know what he is going to do.

I knew he would take credit for Keystone in order to neutralize it as a campaign issue, and he did. He is completely transparent to me and most people. He may well announce agreement for the northern part closer to election time; he can always take it back after the election.

High oil prices are an issue, so he will dump oil on the market from the Strategic Reserve in the fall. No problem. High unemployment is an issue, so they will keep doctoring the stats and the press will keep spreading the phony numbers. Meanwhile his regulators will keep cranking out regulations that bring his entire agenda in through the regulator’s pen.

No need for congress. I often call him the cardboard cutout president, but for sure we also have a cardboard cutout congress to match. The republic has been replaced by a monarchy, but the monarch is a regulator hidden behind a curtain.

I told a lib aquaintence, who spent MONTHS sending out Keystone-hating MSNBC/ThinkProgress Propaganda on Facebook, that he was supposed to LIKE the Keystone Pipeline today, because Obama had “OK’d” construction of the EVIL Southern Half, that would allow oil to be exported.

He went in to a spitting rage and denied it, calling me a LIAR, until I showed him the stories on my smart phone about today’s events.

THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WAS PRICELESS. It was like he had been hit by a truck, MSNBC had not prepared him for this.

Yet, I know that within just a few days, he’ll be parrotting whatever the latest MSNBC/MediaMatters faked outrage is.

Democrats KNOW their followers are just useful idiots.

Cushing (pop. 9,596) has been in the "oil bidness" since 1912. They are wildcatters, oil drillers, oilfield services, oil storage, refiners and pipeliners.

There is no college in Cushing. Nor is it a county seat, thus few government jobs.

I wonder how many votes Obama got in Cushing in 2008. I wonder many he would get today.

You may not find ten of his supporters in this town of ten thousand.
