We normally wouldn't bother writing about the president's daughter, but the story of Malia Obama's spring break deserves mention if only because it's troubling on so many levels.

First you have to wonder about sending a 13-year-old to drug-war-torn Mexico to frolic with her friends. It doesn't strike us as the wisest move, given the potential risk to her and those around her.

Uh huh....I can see how down to earth the Sidwell Friends parents are. Let's see, $26.5k for elem and $32+k for high school and maybe another $5k per annum expenses if they rough it. Comes to about $340k for 12 yrs. Course the families you know that have two students need to come up with about $700k for the whole ticket. What a relief it must be to the parents when they finally go off to college where top tier tuition is a mere $42-$45k per year, about $170k for the four year ride, not counting spring break expenses.

Half a mil plus of post tax dollars min, why that's chump change.

Funny how the DC public schools before home rule and teachers unions produced so many admirals, generals, top tier academics and business folk. My tiny HS of about 500 somehow managed to produce two astronauts along with educating various cabinet member off spring along with those of foreign embassy staff. You wouldn't happen to know how many Sidwell grads were drafted during the Viet Nam wars years would you? My memory gets fuzzy but I seem to recall that being the hot bed of HS protests against the war.

I have no idea how or why Mexico was chosen as a destination for this year’s trip>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Very Bad idea. There are cogent reasons why there is a travel advisory concerning Mexico.

The truth about Mexico has not been reported by the MSM and the government of Mexico has a news blackout in place on the topic of its Drug Gangs, necessitating reporting by an illicit site;

http://www.blogdelnarco.com

When you see what is happening there ( BROWSE THE SITE) you would wonder why anyone would want to send their kid to Mexico.Sidwell parents must be extraordinarily ignorant. I never would have signed off on my kid going to Mexico now!!!

Moochie wouldn't put herself in danger by going to Mexico. The State Department has issued warnings, after all.

I wonder if the Obama's also make their kids taste food, first? Heck, I wonder if those are even their kids?

Could be. Doesn’t bother me. Over the years, a fair number of presidents have had school age children. Offhand I remember the Kennedy kids, Amy Carter, Chelsea Clinton, and now the Obama girls. Can’t think of a recent Republican case, but that’s immaterial.

Children are a good thing. IMHO, if a president has young kids, we should not begrudge sending a security detail on school trips. Even to Mexico.

Most school kids get one foreign vacation trip a year, if their parents can afford it.

How many foreign countries have the obama girls been to in the past three years? The obama daughter should have given her spot to some needier child and spared us paying for the SS. The school should have picked a safer place to vacation.

I suspect the average Sidwell parent makes more than I do. That doesn’t bother me. Why should it bother you?

Voucher the schools in DC and I could afford Sidwell too. That’s what bothers me.

You poor thing. It's humor. But you take yourself so seriously you have to write a book about it. Would think someone who matters that much would have bigger fish to fry!

you stay cool in that funky universe of yours, pumpkin.

There have been several threads on this issue (most of them pulled because people started picking on the kids), and many of them have been brimming over with a surprising level of resentment towards Sidwell as an “elitist” school. I may have misinterpreted your remark, but I was reacting to a broader outburst of, essentially, pretty raw class warfare rhetoric. Not what I expect from Freepers.

I acknowledge that the issue does hit a hot button with me. Nothing would help most of our major cities more, or faster, than fixing the schools. If it were up to me, I’d voucher them. But it the meantime, places like Sidwell should be applauded. My daughter isn’t headed to Sidwell, but we are on a parallel private school track. We are paying a hefty price while DC wastes huge amounts on a disaster. That does get my goat.

Hi, sphinx...do you know other vacation sites the school has chosen for Spring Break?

Just wonderin’

Was Chelsea Clinton educated at the same school...where did they vacate on Spring Break?

It’s based on the iconic image titled, “His Master’s Voice” with the gramaphone and the terrier.

Thirteen is fairly young to be sending on even a chaperoned trip to drugwar anyplace.

Bad decision on the part of the parents.

Ha!

The German Shepherd commands respect. Also, probably on duty for crowd control because you can’t bark in a crowded theater!

My kids never had a foreign vacation, as all of my friends’ children never had one. We couldn’t afford one. Their class trip was to Chicago.

At least it wasn't to East St. Louis.

Makes you wonder about the other parents who consented to send their kids into a war zone.

The “big deal” part is going to a country with multiple travel advisories in which serious drug wars are ongoing, necessitating accompaniment by a whole platoon of Federal Secret Service agents for security at public expense.

Now, now, now...no need to bring common sense into this.

There's no doubt in my mind that Mexican cartels were paid in advance to ensure the safety of that group. You would need at least 4 times the security personnel they had to adequately defend against an attack from one of the cartels.

Fast and furious is running wild...drug wars rampant...all over the country....Not a Safe Place...I would not want my children or grand children going to Mexico even with the dedication and protection of a platoon of Secret Service Agents...Not a good parental decision....on the tax payers dime....
