I though California was already way past broke. I guess they are just trying to see how deep they can possibly dig the hole.

would make state university tuition-free for full-time, in-state students who maintain a 2.7 GPA

2.7 gpa? That's hard.

” It would raise at least $2 billion a year to backfill the lost tuition by adding 0.7 percent to the income tax rates for those with $250,000 in taxable income and 1.7 percent for taxable incomes of $500,000 or more.” If this actually got on the ballot it could pass I am sorry to say. There are many who live here who would not personally pay the new higher tax rate so they would vote yes for it. This is how they keep getting parcel taxes passed they exempt seniors
in exchange for there yes vote.
If this did get on the ballot with the other tax increases Brown and his cohorts are putting forth some will be looking at a 14 to 15 state income tax. I hate this state

This is the kind of stupid stuff Liberals come up with when they don’t even understand the most simple principles of economics.

They think it is a great idea so somebody just find a way to pay for it some magical way. What a bunch of morons. Add this on to other higher fees and taxes for wealthier people and there will be almost no wealthy people left in this state. Then nobody will have a job. What a great idea.....

.... LOL.... our state became insolvent way back when dinosaurs ruled the earth and YET ....... The fanciful powers that be are still finding more exciting and creative ways to spend that incredible and mystical mountain of cash that isn’t there. And sob and cry when painful cutbacks need to be made...... Unfortunately .... the cutbacks are never made because the fanciful powers that be ..... keep gazing upon that incredible and mystical mountain of cash that isn’t there.

This is exactly why Athenian democracy failed and the founders tried to found a republic. These fools will award themselves “free tuition”. California ( perhaps the wealthiest state in the nation) is already bankrupt. The state is of course overwhelmingly Democratic. Obama will try to get the rest of the country to bail out not only California but Illinois and New York who are equally corrupt. Elections do matter.

I can just imagine what tuition will be 5 years after this passes. Double? Triple? And of course, the tax will then have to be increased.

Californians are pretty politically stupid people, so this kind of thing is probably pretty appealing to many of them.

If I lived there I think it would be fun to start a ballot initiative that constitutionally required the state of California to send “the 99%” one million dollars per year on tax day. It would be hilarious to see if enough Californians exist right now to pass such an absurd idea. I think there might be.

Seriously, anyone living in CA should move out. The place is a lost cause. We could really use good conservatives in other places to help bolster our numbers in increasingly purple states like VA, NC, CO, etc.

Free college tuition in California this is GREAT!!!!

I will send my kid to UCLA for his first year of College and pay the out of state tuition.

By the second year he will be eligible for state residency and he can get free in state tuition.

If out of state tuition is too expensive I can just send him there to live for a year. He can just live and work for a year. Then get residency and go to school for FREE.

If they actually pass such a law that is exactly what would happen for millions of high school graduates. I guarantee it.

I hope this passes. Throw in free gasoline for the commute also. It would be a great exclamation mark to the pathetic state of CA

Let’s have free profs at Berkeley. If students can go free, then why not the rest of them?
