Maher: Hate Crime Laws Give "Liberals A Bad Name"
Real Clear Politics ^ | 3/24/12

Posted on 03/24/2012 5:18:09 PM PDT by Impala64ssa

On his HBO show "Real Time," host Bill Maher spent six minutes discussing his strong opposition to "hate crime laws." "One more aspect of this (Treyvon Martin case) which is hate crimes, and I know that you've (pointing to Andrew Sullivan) written about this. Some people think that a hate crime is a thought crime and this shouldn't be some separate category, a crime is a crime. It's an action. Is that what you guys believe? That's what I believe," Maher said to his panel comprised of Andrew Sullivan, Wendy Schiller and Glenn Greenwald. "It's totally what I believe," Andrew Sullivan said. "I don't want, in any way, the government getting into my mind, into my thought process." The discussion moved on to a specific case involving Rutgers student Tyler Clementi and his former roommate Dharun Ravi that is being labeled a hate crime. Last year, Clementi committed suicide after being hazed by Ravi. Maher says trying this case as a hate crime "gives liberals a bad name. Maher says Ravi was "a mean kid" but that he shouldn't face the amount of jail time he is looking at, 10 years in prison, for being "mean." "If it's against the law to be stupid, we're all going to be in jail eventually," Maher said to guest Wendy Schiller, who accused Ravi of attacking Clemente because of his sexual orientation. "He was a mean kid." "I just think this is what gives liberals a bad name," Maher also said. "Just this? Nothing else, just this?" Schiller asked.

It’s been said (or rumored) Coulter and Maher dated.

This shows his true colors:

A man who would get his moment of jollity at the expense of the widow and orphan of a decent man who died a tragic death displays it perfectly.

Drunk, stoned and stupid is no way to go through life.

Well, of course he argues against hate crime laws. Because hate is what he’s all about.

I think they both believe what they’re saying, 100%, both him and Andrew Sullivan.

And I agree with them on THIS.

I also believe Maher and Sullivan realize the folly of trying to elevate “hate” crimes. Convict people based upon what they do, criminal actions, not a guess as to what’s going on in their heads. Does it require that much intelligence to see this? I don’t think so. They get it.

If you ask me I think this is a head-fake by the libs to tone it
down for Obama's re-election bid.

Not for one second does the left back off without an agenda. And Maher is
the worst not-politicion mouth out there.

Maybe it’s starting to dawn on Maher that ‘liberals’ are closed minded control-freak totalitarians.

Maher is a sick twisted man who is capable of saying anything-and usually does. Hate crimes, as they are applied, permit the left to profile against white males, which is perfectly consistent to the liberal mentality. The laws inject the politically correct mindset into charging decisions. If not facially unconstitutional, they are unconstitutional “as applied”.

Perhaps Maher fears that if conservatives gain power, they will somehow define his actions as "hate crimes," and, thus, he is seeing the disadvantages of allowing political groups to define actions motivated by "hate."

Good one. I'm sure with enough power behind us - maybe a suck-up press that switches sides - we could become just as thin-skinned and arrogant as elite liberals are... of course, at that point most of us would change parties and stand with the 'out' group - and the Constitution...

Hate crimes are thought crimes - thought crimes are totalitarian...

“Maher is moving right while Ann Coulter is moving left.”

Interesting thought but, of course, untrue in both
cases.

Unlike most libs Maher is simply against the government
trying to read peoples’ minds. He thinks that job is
his. There are a few (very few) libs who understand
the slippery slope of hate crime laws. He is one of
them. He ain’t moving to the right, no way, no how.

Maher: Hate Crime Laws Give "Liberals A Bad Name"

Never mind the fact that Bill Maher gives liberals a bad name.

Maher can relate to mean kids.

When liberals get on their race and sex witch hunts, it does have a way of turning on them. This is what Maher is worried about. The double standard does not hold with free speech.

It is because Maher realizes that he can be arrested for committing hate crimes, depending on who is the prosecutor’s chair. It is a nightmare, and the Rutgers kid committed a sick joke, but it is one that happens 100 times a day on US college campuses and maybe Queer Nation ought to “get used to it”. It was a bad joke, not a crime, but the victim was in a protected class and now the ‘criminal’ has to pay double. What BS!

Hate Crimes are directly out of Orwell and I wish the Supreme Court would abolish them. It is just damn unconstitutional.

According to Yuri Bezmenov, an ex KGB agent who gave an excellent interview about how the communist really work, when they take over a country the first ones they eliminate are the useful idiots. The useful idiots expect too much from the those who have taken over because they think that they are owed things for the help they gave. For the current leaders it is much more efficient to eliminate them. This interview, though from earlier, is well worth listening to if you haven't listened to it yet. It is truly eye opening.

Maher also recently called the Occupy Wall Street crowd a bunch of “douchebags”. It just goes to show that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Who knows, maybe he is waking up. It can happen to anyone, even him, not likely, but it can.
