Black Friend Defends Shooter of Florida Teen

March 25, 2012

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - George Zimmerman cried for days in remorse after shooting dead a black Florida teenager, a family friend of Zimmerman said on Sunday, offering a sympathetic portrayal of the man at the focal point of a national uproar.

Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic, shot Trayvon Martin, 17, in what he said was self defense during an altercation in the gated community Zimmerman was watching on February 26 in Sanford, Florida. After barely going noticed for weeks, the case has since galvanized the country and renewed a national discussion about race.

"He couldn't stop crying. He's a caring human being," Joe Oliver, 53, a former television news reporter and anchor in Orlando who has known Zimmerman for several years, told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"I mean, he took a man's life and he has no idea what to do about it. He's extremely remorseful about it," Oliver said, relating stories told to him by Zimmerman's mother-in-law, a close friend of Oliver's wife.

Oliver's account counters the withering criticism Zimmerman has sustained from demonstrators across the country who have demanded his arrest and accused him of racial bias in targeting Martin. Celebrities have taken up the cause of justice for Trayvon, and President Barack Obama said "all of us have to do some soul-searching" as a result of the tragedy.

"I'm a black male and all that I know is that George has never given me any reason whatsoever to believe he has anything against people of color," Oliver said.

Sanford police did not arrest Zimmerman, saying the evidence could not disprove his account of self-defense, though the case is under review by a state special prosecutor and the U.S. Justice Department.

Can someone in the New York Times tell me what a white Hispanic is?

I wasn’t aware Hispanics came in different colors? This is really gonna mess up those employment applications when they ask about race.

“Martin was black, and Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.”

Just came across the above statement in a MSNBC.com article.

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/25/10854229-witness-zimmerman-never-tried-to-help-trayvon-martin

Obama is universally described as “Black.”

Yet, his mother was white.

Zimmerman's father was white.

Why isn't Zimmerman described as being completely “Hispanic?”

Is there some secret DNA thing going on here that I don't know about?

Is this sexism?

Is female DNA less potent than male DNA?

Or is it just a convenient obfuscation to help the politically correct racial narrative of this story?

The media is struggling with this. They don’t want to alienate the latinos. What they wanted was a black vs white issue where the white guy was wrong and “white guilt” could be magnified and projected before the election.

This would do two things in their evil minds. 1. Motivate blacks to turn out and vote and 2. Renew the “white guilt” feelings that helped to elect obama.

They don’t want to make the Hispanics who already have deep seeded issues with black culture, more anti-black. This is a pr disaster for obama and the left.

Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. See my post 33 for examples.

Don’t carry a gun unless you are absolutely prepared to use it. If you do draw down on someone, you had better have no doubts that you can pull the trigger. If you do pull the trigger, empty the gun. That’s what I was taught.

My understanding is that scientifically there are three races, Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. All else is heritage or ethnicity. Technically, all but the two are White, however, politically, this hasn't been the case for quite some time.

"Hispanic" is derived from the Island Hispaniola, or the Dominican republic.

Both Italians and Spaniards in their ventures populated the Island and the resulting posterity is now called Hispanic.

If that is not correct, please show me the way.

Thanks.

I appreciate your post and I think you got my point. It’s all about framing the story and the bastards in the media have the power of the pen... At least wrt the LSM.

Cheers!

I understand Mr. Zimmerman’s mother is from Peru.

My nephew married a girl from Peru. She refers to herself as a Latina, and never uses the word Hispanic to describer herself.

That being the case, why are not the Hispanic/Latino folks speaking up about the lynch mob mentality that is going on in our country? I really do have concerns about the safety of Mr Zimmerman, as all sense of fairness has gone from the discussion (if you can call it that) of the case.

One more thing - George Zimmerman’s family name sounds either German or Jewish (or both?), and neither groups emjoy any sympathy from liberals now. He would be a lot better off with an Irish surname, IMHO. (this is just my opinion and a bit of sarcasm).

The media is struggling with this.

You have to admit, it's fun to watch liberalism "prezelate"? its self.

The problem is where it will lead to....not a good place.

Bill Richardson has a non-Spanish surname, but he is always called Hispanic.

There are some people in the Latin American countries who are entirely of European ancestry, or very nearly so. They tend to be at the higher income levels in those countries so maybe less likely to immigrate to the US than those of Indian, African, or mixed ancestry. There are Hispanics who could just as well have been born in Spain as in the Western hemisphere.
