Actually, he was treated on the scene by paramedics and from what I understand refused transportation to the hospital. At that time, he was taken to the police station, questioned, gave a statement, had his pistol and clothing confiscated and then released.

Based on eye-witness testimony and physical evidence that collaborated Zimmerman's testimony, he was released. This was known days after the incident, but did not fit the narrative so it was not widely reported.
