Gingrich insists he'll run until Romney has 1,144 delegates (article and short video)

Newt Gingrich insisted Monday that he would continue in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination until Mitt Romney secured the 1,144 delegates necessary to clinch the nomination, saying 'a whole new conversation' would occur if the frontrunner was also unable to hit the necessary total.

"I think the morning that he gets 1,144 that are locked down, then I think he claim to be the nominee. But until then, he's not the nominee," Gingrich said on CNN. "Remember, I'm from Atlanta, where we were ahead by 10.5 games last year with only 28 games to go, and the Cardinals didn't quit. Everybody wanted them to, but they just kept coming and they ended up winning. I think this is not over until it's over. "

..."Look, I think the front-runner's clearly Mitt Romney. Out of 10 million votes cast so far, he's only gotten four million. So he's the weakest front-runner in modern times," Gingrich said.

Gingrich defended his candidacy from calls from Republican leaders—and some of his own supporters—to exit the race.

"I say to them the same thing that Hillary Clinton would have said in 2008 when she was taking on Barack Obama. That ran all the way to mid-June, and only when he had finally the votes did he have the votes. This is a contest. "

"Gov. Romney spent six years, $40 million of his own money. He has outspent the rest of us by huge margins, and he's gotten four million out of 10 million votes. There is no obligation to concede it to him. If he can win it, more power to him. If he doesn't win it, then June, July and August become very interesting months," Gingrich said.

Host Wolf Blitzer then pressed Gingrich to admit that rival Rick Santorum ...

I caught Newt on Cavuto today. He was excellent!

I saw it, also, and thought it was excellent, too. apparently, santorum was on Friday and got into a shouting match with Neil and had one of his little Santantrums. I am hoping Cavuto has lots of regular viewers who saw both, and noted the difference in maturity and depth of experience.

GO NEWT!!

If Newt wants Romney (ridiculous on its face), why then wouldn’t he withdraw, endorse him, give his delegates to Mitt, and campaign for him?

BINGO! Not only that, the party establishment would embrace and fall in love with Newt and he would be the GOP's kingmaker! He could probably write his own ticket from here on, IF that is what he wanted..

Instead, for the past month, Newt’s only ads attack Mitt- and today again he defended Rick (re: Rick’s temper tantrum)- citing the pressure of the campaign.

Not only did he graciously defend rick, when, if santorum had the same type of opportunity, he would gotten off a major smarm on Newt. but more importantly, Newt pivoted from that right onto Obama and his hot mic remarks, with a scathing indictment, and asking what other deals has barack made for after the election? He said santorum wasn't the dangerous one, obama was... Rick Santorum has never been that gracious or honest about Newt..

“they are having many many really crummy days in a row...”

That thought gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling in my heart. ;>)

“Newt can stay in but he won’t be winning anything. To think so is delusional.”

Saintorum can stay in but he won’t be winning anything. To think so is delusional.

Exhibit A—you just bashed Santorum...did it help Newt? (we all know he is finished so no)) did it help Mitt? (well duh!) We know it hurts Rick.

You have made your pick and it is Mitt—simple logic.

You have been all to “Happy” to bash Newt, I didn’t Bash Santorum, I bashed you for your tactics, I don’t believe you’re likely to get many converts to Santorum with your tactics and I don’t think Santorum is likely to get many converts with the comments he’s made lately. Your tactics are as likely to turn people away from Santorum as his own comments and “FISCAL” record.

His quote, to me means we need a debt so I can refrain from voting for the outrageous spending the other guy wants while continuing to vote for the outrageous spending I want. If we had a balanced budget and no outstanding debt I couldn’t control myself and I would vote for his outrageous programs also.

If you are looking for conversions to Santorum you need to show he is actually better than Romney. At this point I don’t want either of them. I’ve tried to refrain from this type comment on Santorum but you and your buddy dforest seem to bring out the worst in some people. You have ignored my reasons for staying with Newt other than saying it’s your guy or Romney choose now. The choices I make are mine, not yours and I’ll make the right choice at the right time and I guarntee it won’t be anytime before one of the candidates gets the 1144 needed.

You mention rational decisions, how rational would it be for me to jump on the Santorum bandwagon now even as it’s headed for the ditch and how rational is it for you to believe that someone such as myself with my beliefs and loyalties would jump to your guy because of what sounds like schoolyard taunts, “If you don’t like Rick your for Romney”, NO I don’t like your guy, I didn’t like Dole or McCain or HW or Ford either. It’s like a very bad snakebite and I’m not going to cut my foot off until the gangrene sets in.

I left three comments out of post 86. NO I don’t like Romney, No I don’t like Paul, and your logic and rational are both suspect.

Newt was able to help Mitt squeak by Santorum in primaries like Ohio and Michigan

That alone is the most telling event in this election. What a legacy for Newt. There has been plenty of blood letting on these threads, but to what purpose?

Pray for our Nation, for surely we are about to see how badly we need Him.
