Mayor Bloomberg to homeless, 'No kugel for you!' (Charities cannot donate 'unapproved' food in NYC)

In a perverse variation of Marie Antoinette's, "Let them eat cake!," Jeff Stier, writing in the New York Post, relates that New York's fussy Big Brother Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has now decreed "Let them starve!" to the city's homeless.

Excess, left over food from lavish Jewish weddings, Bar Mitzvahs (coming of age ceremonies for Jewish boys when they reach 13) or even kiddushes (food served at the post service social hour) has been donated to city shelters for over a decade, similar to programs offered by churches and other institutions. But freshly cooked, nutritous and delicious food good enough for celebrants and their friends and family is not good enough for the homeless.

New York Post:

_______________________________

In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can't assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, have led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation. They've brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood. (Disclosure: I know the food is so tasty because I've eaten it - I'm an OZ member.) The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.

DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg's emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers.

Ban on food donations is consistent with helping the homeless.

Let that insanity sink in a bit.

This is exactly what liberals in our cities spend theit time on - making everything more expensive and less efficient for the citizens.

In addition to (deliberately) destroying private charity and making it more expensive to feed the homeless, just think about how wasteful it is that city employees even think about and promulgate such rules.

In a just society these officials would be told to stop wasting money and get out on the street at night to monitor crime, or else be fired because they are worse than useless.

New scientific breakthrough: Deprivation of food provides nutrition, something akin to, "unemployment stimulates the economy'!!!

Commies want complete control of donations and distributions.
Preferably cash, so they can take their cut.
If they're not in control, charity is of no use to them.
Of course they can't say that, so they use any other excuse they can find.

Not to mention all the food that is wasted or thrown out as a result. More unintended consequences of stupid liberal ideas emanating from the government. Good intentions gone astray. The homeless will love the fact that they can’t find a meal, but that if they do, it will be nutritious for them (sarc). Or maybe Bloomberg wants to run off the homeless in NYC for lack of food? Can you spell hidden agendas?

Leftists have a mental disorder.

Nah, they just see all this as a process of acquiring power for themselves. Starvation and riots would just be a minor payment on the road to socialism

Maybe the ACLU is behind this insanity. Think about it...food donated by Churches, Synagogues, and surplus foods from RELIGIOUS festivities has a RELIGIOUS symbolism.
These foodsutffs, donated to government agencies may well be held to violate the “wall of separation between Church(!) and State”. This cannot be allowed to continue.
Bloomie only means well.
If you believe this, please seek help ASAP.

“This was about improving nutrition for all New Yorkers” is the justification? They are friggin’ homeless!

Yes, this is insanity.

I'm of the opinion it is time to start passive resistance.

Ignore Bloomberg. Just give the food out. Make them shoot you.

How could there be homeless people in New York? Hasn't foi gras been banned? Isn't government permission to keep and bear arms extremely expensive and time-consuming? Hasn't "excessive" use of salt in restaurant kitchens been banned? Isn't the city government heavily involved in "arts" programs? Considering all the good that's been done, hasn't homelessness become a thing of the past?

NYC has 45,000 homeless men, women and children. Over in Newark and Essex County there are only ~3,800. If I were Bloomberg, I’d probably be looking at ways to make NYC less attractive and reduce the large number of homeless.

They know what they are doing.

Take every power and duty onto government.

Then anyone who opposes government opposes all the things government provides.
