A FATHER who killed a burglar by attacking him with a meat cleaver was "justified", a Notts coroner has ruled.
Steven Shaw and his brother Craig broke into a house in Morrell Bank on the Bestwood Estate on March 31 last year.
In a "harrowing and brutal" attack, which lasted between 10 and 15 minutes, they assaulted taxi driver Xiaopeng Wang and his wife, and also left the couple's baby injured.
The violence only stopped when Mr Wang found a meat clever and hit Mr Shaw with it, causing a "sharp force trauma" to his head.
At Mr Shaw's inquest yesterday, Notts Coroner Mairin Casey recorded a verdict of lawful killing and said: "The defensive action taken by Mr Wang was proportionate and justified.

Read the article. Couldn’t figure out if it was Steve or Craig who took the cleaver blow in the face.
Those meat cleavers do some damage, even the smaller ones with the six-inch blades (which I usually use for chopping up ribs) . . .
Craig is going to jail.
Stevie is dead, from a cleaver blow to the head.
Thanks. I wonder if Craig learned anything from this misadventure?
who took the cleaver blow in the face.
“Cleaver, it’s not nice to hit other boys in the face.”
“Yesss Mom”
” Now go and wash up, dinners almost ready.”
“Hi Mrs.Cleaver, you look lovely today”.
“That Eddie Haskel is such a nice boy,
Cleaver, why can’t you be more like him?”
“Yesss Mom”
Headline: Wang takes cleaver to head.
Has Obama said the one who took the cleaver blow to the head could be his son?
Mofo got WANG CHUNG.
Moral of the story: Don’t beat Mr. Wang.
Too bad he didn’t whack the other one with it too.
Is it just me.....or does anyone find it odd that, in the UK, it’s the coroner who decides if a killing is justified or not?
Yep, that'll work
That's a myth which refuses to die, despite frequent patient efforts of British FReepers over the years to explain what the law actually is.
That's not quite right. The police and Crown Prosecution Service decided in this, and other similar cases, that no crime had been committed and therefore no charges were brought. However, a coroner's inquest is still legally required, since there has been a sudden violent death: and 'lawful killing' is one of the verdicts available to the coroner. The decision not to prosecute would have been made long before the inquest took place, so the verdict was really a formality.
OK; I appreciate the clarification. Without the backgrounder you provided, it made no sense to me.
Mr. Wang is very fortunate that Mr. Shaw was, I assume, not a correctly pigmented individual wearing a hoodie.
I wonder if Prime Minister David Cameron said that if he had a son he’d look like Mr. Shaw.
does anyone find it odd that, in the UK, its the coroner who decides if a killing is justified or not?..Yes. All this time I thought it was the media and NAACP that made those decisions.
At their best your self defense laws still stink.
