No Subway $5 Footlongs In SF, 'Cost of Doing Business' Too High ($10.24 min wage)
NBC Bay Area ^ | 03/29/12 | Chris Roberts

Posted on 03/29/2012 6:41:19 AM PDT by nhwingut

The catchy Subway sandwich shop jingle involving a variety of foot-long sandwiches available for $5 doesn't apply in San Francisco. [SNIP] Apparently, the city's new minimum wage, raised to $10.24 as of Jan. 1, make $5 footlongs an impossible business model.

Supports my argument that I’ve made all along. Fine — raise the minimum wage to $100 per hour. Welcome to the $27 Big Mac, and $50,000 “economy cars”. But unfortunately you can’t explain to those making minimum wage how that actually works.

Common saying in San Francisco.

“Is that a footlong?”

“And then some.”

I wouldn’t be comfortable eating a hotdog in SF anyway...too many images would crowd my mind as I ate it.

I love the comments left about greedy corporations.

Typical liberal idiots, don't even realize that most subways are independently owned. Maybe some owners own 2 or 3, but hardly a big evil corporation.

I knew someone who owned one. Said he made between $50-60k a year, but required ALOT of his time. He said it was better for him to work a regular job.

And don’t go into a convenience store in San Fran and order a slurpee.

He said it was better for him to work a regular job.

Yeah, buying a franchise like that is tantamount to buying yourself a job. That's not to disparage it, but it's no get-rich-quick scheme.

As for the SF minimum wage; these people are complete dopes. Unequivocal, absolute, dyed-in-the-wool idiots. Prices rising because of higher minimum wages hit the people working for minimum wage the hardest wiping out the pay increase.

It is only when pay raises are a result of improved productivity that an employee benefits.

I liked Tom Hanks a lot more back when he was making movies like “Bachelor Party.”

People lament that the dollar is not based on anything. No gold standard, no connection to anything real, just floating.
But it is.
The dollar is, by law, based on the mundane labor standard.
It varies by jurisdiction; in SF, $1 = 5 minutes 51 seconds of any low-wage task that pretty much anyone can do (sweep floors, make subs).
Six minutes of minimal-skill labor does not have much inherent value. Ergo, a dollar has little value ... and the higher they jack the minimum wage, the less each dollar is worth.

Such a place already exists. It is called “Denmark”.

My friend’s son went over there. Dishwashers make $23 per hour with full benefits. And a sandwich and glass of beer will set you back twenty-five bucks.

minimum wage from $7 to $10.24 would be a 50% increase

remember... union contracts are based on a PERCENTAGE above minimum

the san fran mob bosses just gave the unions a 50% pay raise
