Three men convicted of multiple killings were hanged Thursday in Japan's first executions in more than a year and a half.

Inmates on death row do not know when they will be executed until the last minute, while family members and lawyers are only told afterward.

If only they were so lucky...in feudal Japan only members of the Samurai class were executed by decapitation, usually via Seppuku. Lower class criminals, miscreants, and offenders were usually crucified or boiled alive.

Decapitation (guillotine type) is still a quicker death than hanging. If am not mistaken, sunnis/wahhabis (e.g. Saudis) still use decapitation (with a sword) as opposed to Iranian regime, who hang people, mind you, they both execute in full public view (unlike the Japs).
