"The Nation's" list of leading American "progressives" is an illuminating insight into the American left and the very essence of "progressive" thought -- whatever that might be. Take a look at it, study it, think about it. This is truly a teachable moment.

Instead, TheNation insists that "comrade Paul" was a "progressive." That is particularly remarkable for another reason: a frustrated Gus Hall had warned about progressives trying to portray [Paul] Robeson as one of their own. A vigilant Hall said that communists "cannot allow liberal, progressive" forces "to turn Robeson into a liberal. The real Robeson was a revolutionary, a Communist . Paul Robeson was one of ours -- a Communist leader, a beloved comrade."
......[I.F.]Stone is listed at number 26 on TheNation's list. Likewise, there is no mention of words like "communist" or "Soviet Union" anywhere in his profile. That's no surprise. Stone has been hailed by liberals for decades as the literal "conscience" of journalism. The Los Angeles Times dubbed him the "conscience of investigative journalism," and CNN's Larry King called him a "hero."...

The Planned Parenthood founder...Sanger offered this stunning prediction: "All the [Bolshevik] officials with whom I discussed the matter stated that as soon as the economic and social plans of Soviet Russia are realized, neither abortions nor contraception will be necessary or desired. A functioning Communistic society will assure the happiness of every child, and will assume the full responsibility for its welfare and education."
This was pure progressive utopianism, an absolute faith in central planners.
Even guiltier of such misguided Soviet infatuation was John Dewey, founding father of American public education, who was so suckered by the Soviets that I would need a few thousand words here just to detail the outrage...The Nation's list of influential progressives -- at number 5...........

Paul Robeson had one of the finest singing voices of all time, but he was a rabid communist and America hater.
Paul Robeson, commie that he was, was in a movie called “Sanders of the River” (1935). This movie was typical of other movies of the 30s and extemely politically incorrect by today’s standards.
Although his singing voice carried the film, he hated the way he was portrayed in the film so much that a few years later (and then a millionaire), he tried to buy all copies of the film and have them destroyed.
He must have missed one or two copies, because the film is now copyright expired, in the public domain and freely downloadable from archive.org.
The living names on that list should all have Cuban passports. Just to be consistent.
I always found Robeson’s voice pretty boring. Even in his “Showboat” (the best of all the versions), I don’t think his voice matches William Warfield’s in beauty and variation. That said, Robeson is far less starchy in his role as “Joe” than in any other picture he which he appeared. The worst is watching him in one of those horrible red diaper summer camp videos. If Joe Hill wasn’t already dead, Robeson would have killed him with THAT version.

A lot of the usual suspects made the list, I see.
To be a great capitalist one must make a lot of money and, probably create a lot of jobs. To be a great leftist all you have to do is fall for a silly fantasy and never stop talking about it. It doesn’t hurt to blame the job creator for being rich either.
I was disappointed to discover that some of them are still alive.
Must buy more pikes.

John Hall NY- 19 (One hit wonder youre still the one Hall) can be taken off the list. We booted his butt out in the 2010 election and elected Nan Hayworth.
Pennsylvania’s Mike Doyle, not on the list?
He represents most of the union slacker areas in and around
Pittsburgh.
I Want to See the Hard Core communist/socialist agenda Crushed. I want to see their political philosophy dead and discredited. I want to see those enamored of it eradicated from the media, from politics, from academic positions, from any position of power. I want to see the adherents of that dead and discredited idea in charge of nothing beyond a gandy stick and acknowledged for what they are.
As intellectually challenged residents of small communities
Funny, he is prominent among the intellectuals who were working for Stalin and KGB Active Measures, and whose names are dotted conspicuously throughout the Venona Papers.
Ann Coulter, Treason. Good handbook and who's who.
