What's open, closed for Cesar Chavez Day

Friday is Cesar Chavez Day, a legal holiday in California but not a federal holiday. Here's a roundup of what's open and what's closed:

Government: Courts are closed. Most state offices will be closed. Federal and DMV offices will be open. Most county offices are open.

Mail: The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail. Universities: University of California, Irvine, and California State University, Fullerton, are closed. Transit: OCTA buses and Metrolink trains will run on a regular schedule.

Banks: Banks and financial markets will be open.

Events: At noon Saturday, the 12th annual Cesar E. Chavez State Holiday Celebration will feature a “Si Se Puede — Yes We Can!” march and rally. The celebration will also feature work in the “CommUnity Garden” and an address by Maria Elena Chavez, a niece of Cesar Chavez. Assemblyman Jose Solorio, D-Santa Ana, will also attend.

Do you recommend a brief account of this man? Last nite I did a search on him and of course found only accolades and how he was ‘fighting’ for civil rights and union.

Nothing on any violence or the true character of the man and since this is not something I read about when I was in school (I was lucky, we learned the three Rs, true history and science).

Was the guy communist? Read Obama declared a day for him?

And no, I didn’t read this article.

Here's mine: He was a union organizer.

All you need to know.

Ceaser Chavez is like a Mexican Nelson Mandella, communist thug, community organizer. But he didn’t actually Exterminate People on a wholesale level like the Mandella’s di with their “ring of fire” coined by Whinnie Mandella Herself.

In AZ, where Chavez was born and it’s kind a biggish day, everything is open, nothing is closed. Most places of work that give a day off for it make it a floating holiday.

When my son told me he was coming home for the weekend because he has Friday off, I asked him why and he said, “Ceasar Chavez Day.”

I said, “No, really, why?”

LOL

Oh well, good for me, I get to see my baby:)

Although it's long out of print, Bitter Harvest by John Steinbacher (Whittier, Calif.: Orange Tree, 1970) is a sharply critical account, as is Patty Newman's Do It Up Brown (San Diego, Calif.: Viewpoint, 1971).

Communist, you ask? I suspect so, but I can't recall clear evidence. I would wager that the here are some scholarly treatments that prove he was.

Cesar Chavez was liar, and a union thugs' thug.

He was also the only human that could undergo week's long "hunger strikes", and visibly gain weight.

Mister Chavez died in a whorehouse (a cheap motel that was a whorehouse, same thing), something that was reported at the time, yet somehow escapes modern reportage.

When I was little, my Mom used to take me to the local grocery store
for an arm full of grapes & lettuce when the UFW was picketing,
She told the clerk we didn’t need any paper sacks.

Well I’m not all that well versed on Cesar Chavez, but I think he was kind of a mixed bag.

He wanted to unionize farmworkers.

His union was actively against illegal immigration.

He wasn’t a Chicano activist even though he’s been adopted by them.
