Are old photos of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman deceptive?
msnbc ^ | 3/31/2012 | AP

When he was shot, Trayvon Martin was not the baby-faced boy in the photo that has been on front pages across the country. And George Zimmerman wasn't the beefy-looking figure in the widely published mugshot.

Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate. Yet they may have helped shape initial public perceptions of the deadly shooting.

When you have such a lopsided visual comparison, it just stands to reason that people would rush to judgment," said Kenny Irby, who teaches visual journalism at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The most widely seen picture of Martin, released by his family, was evidently taken a few years ago and shows a smiling, round-cheeked youngster in a red T-shirt. But at his death, Martin was 17 years old, around 6 feet tall and, according to his family's attorney, about 140 pounds.

FGS. If the non journalist, illiterate bloggers and posters at FR (That's what they think of us) can find more recent pics of Martin and Zimmerman so can the MSM, but we know WHY they haven't.

The news media in this country is going to be so distraught and angry when avg Joe is going to be able to report on events accurately, without bias, and news corps will buy the stuff.

Who provided the "visual comparison?"

The media gave us Barack Obama and now they are fanning the flames for race riots with a few photos and narrative.

In every case they use thier powers to propagandize awhite on black event which causes all sorts of violent backlashes. They should be held accountable for inciting violence. Much like shouting fire in a theater. Another enemy of the American people

Does anyone know the physical characteristics of Martin? I had a conversation with a guy yesterday insisting he was 6’2” and weighed 120 pounds.

Well holy sh*t. You guys at AP are a bunch of Captain Einsteins aren’t you? How many of you did it take to figure that out?

I checked the Orlando Sentinel for the earliest reports of the shooting. The earliest one I found was February 29 and had a picture of Trayvon at 17 and in a Hoodie. Wonder when the parents started to get Promotional Professional Publicity advice and when. Subsequent articles show pictures provided by the parents of the twelve and younger Trayvon.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press

Are these Rights to those who use if for propaganda purposes, who create false truths, or even use it to incite hatred/violence against a group or individual?

Do these Rights trump a persons Right to be Innocent until proven guilty?

America has a long history to our very founding regarding these Rights. But, they came into existence to support both the citizen and the press to be able to inform ourselves of the ....truth. When that intent is violated and infringed upon is it still a protected Right?

Is showing a person as a child, when they were clearly a young man at the time of an incident a breach of the public trust in the press? Does such reporting lead to the public’s perception being false regarding the individual?

Does showing the ‘alleged’ in an orange jumpsuit, instead of the picture of them grouped with his family create a false perception?

Is this really protected Rights? Or do “We the People” deserve better.

"Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate."

Why is "entirely" in there? Oh, that's right. The 12 yo and the 17 yo are both black and both have eyes and ears. Same is true for his baby picture.

So the article acknowledges that the pictures are not accurately depict both men. Yet, it doesn’t provide more recent ones.

I get it now. It’s not the racists in the press that are at fault, it’s the evil pictures that caused the lies to be published. NBC was innocent as the driven snow when they cut the part out of the recording where the dispatcher asked Zimmerman the race of the suspect. The pictures made them do it.

I’ve read multiple reports Martin was 6-3 and Zimmerman 5-9.

The police report said Martin was 6-0 160.

Trayvon Martin special prosecutor imposes news blackout
7:23 p.m. EST, March 29, 2012|

By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel

The special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case on Thursday imposed a news blackout, saying her office would no longer respond to questions about the investigation.

Angela Corey, state attorney in Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, has done several interviews since her appointment one week earlier, including an appearance on CNN and interviews with the Orlando Sentinel and Miami Herald.

But Thursday evening, her media relations manager released a statement, saying Corey’s office would no longer comment about the case.

That happened 24 hours after Sanford released security camera video showing suspect George Zimmerman walking into police headquarters with no obvious signs of injury.

Jackelyn Barnard, Corey’s media relations specialist, was quoted on clickorlando.com, the website of WKMG-Channel 6, Orlando, complaining that the video should never have been released.

Her Thursday night email to journalists said that leaks in recent days had divulged certain details about the manslaughter investigation that should have remained secret.

Corey was imposing the blackout, the email said, “to protect the integrity of the case.”
