Keith Olbermann Complained To Current That Car Service Drivers ‘Smelled, Talked To Him’

On the heels of Countdown host Keith Olbermann‘s firing from Current TV, the network and sources close to it have been quick to buttress their case for the dismissal with details of the temperamental star’s antics. One such source tells Mediaite, among other things, that Olbermann went through 8 different car services (he doesn’t drive), and complained to the network that some of the drivers “smelled,” and “talked to him,”

-snip-

Olbermann plans to counter Current’s PR offensive with an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday

Oh, that's too bad (/s), but it does explain many things besides his lacking the ability to Drive.

Olbermann’s next job: He's starting a new television show on late night radio with Baghdad Bob.

Being chauffered around doesn’t sound very eco-friendly to me, Olby. Why didn’t you use public transport and save the planet and stuff?

More likely it's their diet heavy on lamb/mutton and the spices used to kill the stench to make it edible ~ e.g. thyme? Used to use it here to cover up the odor of death ~ still used in the rest of the world for that.

It's not the garlic ~ it's the sheep!

According to someone he worked with on MSNBC Keith does not want anyone near him making eye contact with him when he’s on TV

I'm no fan of Keith Olbermann.

However, I can think of three plausible explanations.

First, there are a fair number of upper-class or management-level people who, if they have long drives to work or have to spend a lot of time in cars during the day, prefer to hire drivers or use personal chauffeurs because they can get work done in the car if somebody else is driving. Think what it means to live in the wealthy suburbs of LA, Chicago, or New York City, and have to drive downtown to work every day through rush-hour traffic to get to a corporate headquarters. Losing two or three hours per day of potentially productive drive time doesn't make good business sense in some cases.

Second, I know nothing about Olbermann’s personal security situation, but high-profile people can attract threats. There are numerous business executives who consider it important to have a trained driver capable of defending them from potential attackers. Olbermann was hired to become the lead anchor for Current TV, and I would not be at all surprised if the top on-air people for NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, and FOX all have personal drivers with security training.

Third, this isn't just an upper-class phenomenon in some places. In some cities that have widespread availability of public transportation combined with extremely high costs to fuel and maintain and garage private cars, it's not unusual for lots of people not to drive. When I lived in New York City, I knew quite a few people who didn't drive, and as one of the few people in my church who owned a car, I spent lots of time helping people with trips for which they didn't want to take a bus or subway for some reason or other. Same for Seoul, where my wife didn't learn to drive until she came to the United States. Our local Korean PCA pastor's wife still doesn't drive because she never needed a car in Korea and is afraid of American roads, and with her limited English it's probably better that she not drive.

Of course, if the reports about how Keith Olbermann treated his drivers are true, the guy is a 1-percenter jerk who should be “occupied” by the 99 percenters. Wanna take bets on whether that will happen? Few things are worse than liberal hypocrites who abuse people around him who aren't well-off, or the leftist enablers who give them a free pass.

I think I saw recently (after I posted my question) that he has some serious vision problems. (Not talking about his moral vision, which is zero, but his physical vision, which is impaired.)

Yep... didn’t know that information before, but then again I had no reason to find out. Free Republic can be a fascinating source of facts ;-)
