Gingrich Hopes To Team Up With Santorum In Last-Ditch Attempt To Stop Romney Winning GOP Nomination

Gingrich Hopes To Team Up With Santorum In Last-Ditch Attempt To Stop Romney Winning GOP Nomination 31 March 2012 With polls showing Newt Gingrich trailing in fourth place for the upcoming Wisconsin primary he is already getting his back up plans in place with talks of a joint ticket with Rick Santorum.

As Gingrich’s hopes fade for gaining ground in the next primary his state campaign director has announced a shifting of goals focusing on winning the support of ‘soft delegates’ after Tuesday’s vote.

These so-called 'soft delegates' amount to Wisconsin's three Republican National Committee delegates and the three delegates from each of the eight congressional districts who could become unbound at the convention.

Hanging in there: Newt Gingrich's camp are now talking of a shared Gingrich-Santorum ticket

'Newt is going to be focusing on soft delegates, unbound delegates, and of course all of the delegates are unbound after the second ballot,' Lorge told FOX News.

Gingrich's strategy hinges on preventing front-runner Mitt Romney from winning the 1,144 delegates he needs for the nomination. And Lorge revealed discussions that the ex-House speaker may consolidate the delegates he wins over with those supporting Santorum in a bid to overcome Romney’s lead.

'I imagine there's going to be a lot of negotiation and compromising between the pro-Newt Gingrich and the pro-Rick Santorum delegates,' Lorge said. 'You may have a Newt Gingrich-Rick Santorum ticket. You may have a Rick Santorum-Newt Gingrich ticket. Nobody knows how that ticket's going to work out. But I imagine it'll end up being something like that.'

I think it’s probably too late.

Newt never came back into the running after his few early victories, but he continued drawing enough votes away from Santorum to keep Romney moving toward a winning number of delegates.

I was hoping that Newt and Rick could win enough delegates to block a Romney win on the first vote, and then could agree to work together to to combine their delegates and run one as POTUS and the other as VP. But that’s looking less and less likely.

Romney is a total disaster. Pro-abortion, the man responsible for putting gay marriage over the top and gays in the military. He provided the model for Obamacare, and will certainly not work against it. He is a crony capitalist, a left wing socialist, a big spender, and a Mormon bishop who sees himself as the fulfillment of Joseph Smith’s dreams of a Mormon takeover of the presidency.

I will not vote for Romney the baby-killing gay lover under any circumstances. Which apparently leaves us with Obama again, unless we can somehow agree on backing a single third-pary conservative write-in candidate. Or, rather, a second party write-in candidate, since the GOP has now effectively committed suicide. It is dead, finished, gone with the Whigs.

But agreement on a second-party candidate is looking less and less likely, too. Once again, the libertarians are splitting away from the social conservatives, and could care less about working with them, although that’s the only possible way that we can win and straighten out this mess. And once again, we see Freepers busy attacking the other conservative candidates in the race, apparently clueless about the consequences of doing that.

Well, let us pray for our country.

Give us Barabas.

Gingrich will now be causing more damage than good, if he stays in for the winner-take-all states. He will take away just enough votes that Santorum can’t win, thus Romney will get the take-all states.

To seemingly act like he is the smartest person in the race, Gingrich isn’t.

His southern strategy flopped.

Even if he and Santorum do team up, their combined current total is less than what Romney has.

Pawlenty, Bachmann, Perry, and even Cain had enough sense to know when their run was over. Too bad Gingrich doesn’t seem to have that much class.

Gingrich was unelectable from the get-go. He needed to have bowed out after being crushed in FL.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. So when Santorum had only 7 delegates and Newt had 23, Newt should've gotten out?

Poppycock.

Santorum should've gotten out after Newt won SC. That's where the race for a non-Romney nominee was lost.

The lowest polling non-Romneys should throw their support to the highest polling non-Romney in each state. It’s the only possible path to victory for any of them.

Once again... nothing is Santorum's fault. He's the most perfect man to walk the Earth in nearly 2,000 years.

Santorum delivered us to Romney. That's what he was there for.

Actually Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul delivered us to Romney. Everyone knows that Buddy Roemer would have been inevitable had they dropped out. Buddy Roemer is the only one who could have stood up to Obama. All of you Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul voters can now feel smug when we end up with either Romney or Obama. Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul should have all dropped out when Roemer announced. Buddy R. is the man!!!

The idea is to take the primary to the convention floor and stop Romney.

Nothing should have a higher priority for conservatives. Conservatives have nothing to lose in an open convention and a lot to gain. What are the chances that the eventual nominee could be worse than Romney? Olympia Snowe is not getting the nomination, so I say nil.

An open convention is the best thing that could happen to the Republicans. Romney sure as heck isn't firing up the base. As a matter of fact, there is a substantial number of Republicans who won't vote for Romney. Personally, since I think that Romney will give us 90% of Obama's agenda, I won't vote for him and destroy the conservative movement in the Republican Party for such a marginal difference.

Nominating someone other than Romney would energize the party like nothing else can, certainly more than any attempts by Romney to redefine himself for about the 50th time. I have never seen the party so demoralized. We all know in our heart of hearts that Obama is ready to be beaten and we are about to nominate the only candidate who can't beat him. The staid old Republican Party needs to roll the dice. We have a lot of great potential candidates, none of whom are Mitt Romney.

Even the Ron Paulers in WA State agree, that stopping Romney is job one. Ron Paul hates Santorum, but he’s throwing his delegates to Santorum in WA state. We haven’t had our state convention yet and all we had was a caucus, so this isn’t against any rules. It’s going to throw the state convention into turmoil, though. Romney thought that he had WA State bought and paid for.

Absolutely right. To beat Romney we had to unite early. Right after SC was the ideal time. But Santorum never cared about principles and didn't see the importance of stepping aside when the moment was ripe.

And so now we're getting Romney. And Rick thinks he's getting a VP spot. But I don't think he's right about that.

1. Your tagline is superb and needs to be repeated everywhere on FR.

2. The corrupt whores who run the National GOP, its House and Senate caucuses and fund the colossal expenditures on Romney to vilify every actually conservative candidate in the race may be able to nominate him this year but they won't get my vote for him or that of most actual conservatives.

3. The only part of your post I would disagree with is the statement that Romney isn't firing up the base. Old Etch-a-Sketch is firing up you, me and a lot of other conservatives (i.e. the base) to take a walk on the GOP in the POTUS race on election day. In fact, taking that walk will be a new and defining litmus test for conservatives.

God bless you and yours!

The Paul supporters are a mysterious mixture of cliff walkers, whose numbers are not entirely dependable for Republicans in the end. It is hopeful of course that in one state they came through, in an effort to slow Romney, for they too are hoping for a contested convention.

The only life saver the Republican Party has is for a realignment at convention.

NEWT nor Ron Paul can trust Santorum with their delegates that’s for certain and explains why neither have done so.

"Electability" is the Republican Elites Mantra Steel, you carrying their water? Furthermore the same could easily be said of Santorum dropping out.

The fact is Romney has to be stopped....and it took both of them this far to just to keep him at bay....it may very well take them both to get this thing to convention.

I am for whatever the two determine will get this to convention....otherwise Romney has it sewed up.

Santorum has been angling to get whatever he can out of this from the establishment system all along, not only from this presidential run, but from the time he became a career politician

That's exactly right...and those who know Santorum can say this without any reservations whatsoever.

He ran because he wanted to obtain as much face time with the public and others as possible. If that could be reached then he'd be set for offers in various positions of "stability" which is what he's seeking. It sure as heck wasn't about what he could do for the nation as he hasn't accomplished anything substantial to wear that.
