A 30-year-old man was shot and killed Friday evening after he broke into a North Bend home, according to officials with the King County Sheriffs Office. The homeowner shot the intruder because the intruder threatened the homeowner and his girlfriend, said officials.
According to Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriffs Office, the fatal shooting occurred after 11:40 p.m. in the 300 block of Southeast 5th Street when a woman called about a man pounding on her door and windows.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they could not find the man, but they heard a large crash and banging from a nearby house, said officials.
The sheriffs office said a 46-year-old man and his girlfriend were woken up by the sound of glass breaking. The intruder broke a sliding glass door to enter their home.
West said while the couple hid locked themselves in a bedroom and spoke with a 911 operator, the intruder continued to threaten them.
According to West, the intruder was yelling, "Where are you at? I'm going to kill you."
The man who lived inside of the home retrieved his handgun, according to officials. He told the intruder he had a gun and to get out of his house.
After the intruder kept threatening the homeowner, he knocked the bedroom door down, and the homeowner fired at the intruder, said West.
When deputies arrived at the scene they found the intruders body outside of the bedroom.
West said the incident was a clear case of self-defense.

The difference is that I have trained my wife and children, and and we all have CHLs. And I have built my own range, where I am training all six grandchildren in gun safety and proper use.
What makes you fearsome of having a firearm in your house?
You already (should) bear full responsibility for your family's safety. Be careful that you don't receive what you don't wish for...

I was younger than your son when my mother taught me how to shoot her H&R 922. (She demoed its capabilities by lighting kitchen matches with it at 20’.) Teach him well and let him shoot and clean your handguns. That kills the “curiosity” risk — and you have a backup partner if need be.
You may have helped me make up my mind! The key sentence in your post is “I am responsible for security”.
Stay away from “cheap” apartments. Usually those are crime infested. Your residence should be your top priority expense.
That said, home invasions can take place any where. The so called gated communities even are not hard to invade. Have a firearm handy. It may save your life. I will this month after a long period of indecisiveness.
Atta boy.
