Ann Coulter Says Marco Rubio as VP Pick Would Be a ‘Mistake’
ABC News ^ | 04/01/2012 | George Stephanopoulos

Posted on 04/01/2012 12:18:45 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

While pundits, politicians and prognosticators have tapped Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as one of the most likely GOP vice presidential picks, conservative commentator Ann Coulter warned today that such a choice would be a “mistake.”

“I think that would be a mistake because the same people who loved Rubio loved [former presidential candidate and Texas Gov.]Rick Perry,” Coulter told me Sunday during the “This Week” roundtable discussion. “I want someone who’s been a bit more tested.”

As the rising star of the Tea Party and a Hispanic from the delegate-rich state of Florida, Rubio would fix Romney’s two biggest problems: enthusiasm among the Republican base and lackluster support from Hispanics, argued conservative commentator George Will.

But Coulter, who is a firm Mitt Romney supporter, said the GOP frontrunner needs a running mate who is tried and tested, which, as a first-term Senator, Rubio is not. Coulter suggested Romney pick someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

“He’s been tested, he’s steady, he’s not frightening,” Coulter said of Kyl. “He could certainly step into the job.”

Van Jones, a former environmental advisor in the Obama White House, threw a brand new name into the realm of vice presidential speculation: former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served under George W. Bush. “She ticks off a lot of boxes as far as women, persons of color, but she’s actually tested, she’s a national figure and she has foreign policy experience” Jones said. “You want to do something bold, put Condoleezza Rice on the ticket and watch the Obama campaign go crazy.”

Condoleeza Rice lost a lot of her luster with me when she commended Obama for making Hillary Sec. of State.

Condi Rice is pro-choice. She is an academic who has never held elective office or done anything worth mentioning in the private sector. Despite her negatives there is a fair amount to like about Condi, but not enough to make her an attractive VP candidate.

You really want a real conservative third party candidate? So do I and many others here. We've got it. Our own fellow FReeper, Eternal Vigilance, whose name is Tom Hoefling, is certainly a real conservative and he will be available. I ask him to provide you and any other FReeper disgusted with Obamney and Rombama and with the Demonratic Party and with the GOP with the specific details.

If you vote for Tom Hoefling, you vote for Tom Hoefling. He says what he means and he means what he says. What a concept!

Obama = Romney = Obama = Romney; ad infinitum ad nauseam.

AND, it does not matter if Ronaldus Magnus is channeled by necromancers, restored to life in his prime and appears to endorse and/or to run for VPOTUS with the Wall Street leftist Demonrat in Republican drag.

Principled conservatives vote their principles and rely not on crystal balls. I have argued as you are arguing (including with Tom Hoefling here) against third party alternatives. Having voted for Ronaldus Maximus and Bush the Younger and also for every other GOP POTUS candidate nominated in 1968 and subsequently, I will spend the rest of my life rejecting moderate moneyed mushballs and leftists infiltrating the GOP. I've had it after 11 elections in which I voted with satisfaction for GOP candidates only four times. Four years from now, Obozo is term limited and the Demonrats will stay in their own primaries. If Romney is elected, then we have to wait until 2020 to get a worthwhile POTUS.

Romney: Not now, not ever! RULE OR RUIN!

The only two people that would have me reconsider my decision not to vote for Romney are Perry and Jindal. Both are about as independent of the GOPe as possible for a governor. Christie would do a good job as an attack dog, but his positions are too moderate for my liking.

I love Rubio as well BUT, he has sold out to Romney and that should not be rewarded this year if ever.

Better Romney's running mate should be Charles Manson or Maxine Waters or Warren Buffett or Barbara Boxer or Geraldo Rivera or Gloria Allred or Howard Dean. Any of those would be more compatible with Romney anyway and with what he wants the future GOP to be. YEEEEEARGHHHH!

OTOH. Geraldo Rivera is probably too far right to run with Robamney.

Article II, Section 1, paragraph 5, of the constitution provides that any person serving as president of the United States must be a natural born citizen unless living at the time the constitution was adopted. I am confident that Marco Rubio was born after the constitution was adopted. I believe, unless you have contrary information, that he was born IN the United States. Unless you have some other provision of the constitution in mind, where is it provided that his PARENTS had to be CITIZENS of the USA at the time of Senator Rubio's birth?

There are plenty of Americans who would prefer to believe that people born here of foreign nationals are not citizens but that has not been, to the best of my knowledge, the traditional understanding. The early presidents were covered by the provision that references the time of the adoption of the constitution. Those exceptions ran out towards the end of the first half of the nineteenth century when John Tyler (b. 1790) who was our tenth POTUS took over upon the death of William Henry Harrison.

The citizenship of those actually born here, even of parents were foreign nationals, is not questioned generally. The phenomenon of "illegals" entering the US without its permission to give birth here and claim citizenship for any child so born may anger many but it has not changed the law.

Likewise, the election of Obozo as POTUS has angered many on the basis that we know his father was NOT a citizen and that his paternal grandmother has been quoted as saying she was present at his birth in Kenya. I have yet to hear of anyone questioning the citizenship of his mother who was certainly an American citizen by both birth and by the nationality of her parents.

There were people on the Demonrat side in the 2008 election who responded to "birther" complaints about Obama with the perfectly ridiculous claim that Senator John McCain (however reprehensible a candidate and senator) was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father served there in the navy and his mother was there as well.

This stuff is growing like topsy and has gotten out of hand.

Let us posit that Obozo the Elder lived his entire life as a British subject up until Obozo's birth since Kenya was a colony of Great Britain in 1960 or whenever and that Obozo's mother Sideny Anne was an American citizen but gave birth to Obozo in Kenya, he would still be an American citizen by birth to his American citizen mother. This would be true if we changed none of those facts but he was born in outer space. There may have been a statute in effect at the time of Obozo's birth that would have required his mother (but NOT his father) to have attained the age of 21 by the time he was born. Again, there is no constitutional basis for enacting such a statute distinguishing and denying the ability of a twenty-year old mother to pass her citizenship to her child in circumstances where a similarly situated father could do so. Anyone challenging Obozo's "natural born citizenship" would be expected to vindicate the constitutionality of such a statute despite the obvious lack of a rational basis for its enactment.

In Senator Rubio's case, his birth within the USA would suffice even if his parents were here "illegally" which I do not believe has been alleged by anyone and would be irrelevant even if they were here "illegally."

This is true even if people REALLY, REALLY want to believe otherwise unless you have constitutional language of which I am not aware further defining "natural born citizen." Therefore, this is not QED.

We have sooooo many REAL issues to address and we have no POTUS candidate of a major party to address them at the rate things are going. Can we PUHLEEEZE give the birther stuff a rest or, alternatively, PROVE the relevance of it to Obozo or Rubio? Thanks.

There are, by that standard (that the Dems will destroy any GOP VPOTUS candidate), soooooo many good choices. We could be like kids in a candy store.

Most are ideological soulmates of the Mittwit. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, John Cornyn, Nancyboy Kirk, etc., etc., etc.

It's the only issue as far as I'm concerned.

BTW......MINOR V. HAPPERSETT IS BINDING PRECEDENT AS TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL DEFINITION OF A NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.

"You going to not vote for them ...because Rubio parents were born in another country yet he is a citizen born in this country and a current US Senator ?"

That's right. I'll write in Col. Lakin if Rubio is on the ticket, and never vote republican again. EVER!

My first choice would be Sarah Palin because she knows how to chum the water for easy fishing. My second choice would be Newt because his intellect would rap his enemies over the head with his rhetorical wit. However, Mitt will never pick anyone who could do him any good. He’ll pick another Dan Quayle who will be turned like a sausage on a stick until done. And Mitt, in the process, will be done.

these party people had better wise up...I'm sick to death of the same crappy people being "chosen" for us...

Rubio would bring young people and conservatives...Catholics and Hispanics...

I've often though he was a great speaker....
