A major contributor to President Barack Obama's re-election effort is accused of defrauding a businessman and impersonating a bank official.
Donor Abake Assongba gave more than $50,000 to Obama this election season. But her past legal troubles, which include unpaid debts, are creating a new headache for Obama's campaign.
The allegations were first reported Sunday by The Washington Post. ..

I really cannot understand why they would take $50,000 from ANYBODY when it’s just as easy, perhaps easier with less negatives, to just take $50 from, say, 1000 Chinese dishwashers.
Businessmen deserve what they get. They go around exploiting the proletariat and third world countries, so of course there’s payback time. Assongbo merely did her patriotic duty by defrauding that businessman./sarc

But Mrs Assongba is also fending off a civil court case in Florida, where she’s accused of thieving more than $650,000 to help build a multimillion-dollar home in the state - a charge her husband denies.
Mrs Assongba was listed on Obama’s campaign website as one of its volunteer fundraisers - a much smaller group of about 440 people.
Meanwhile, Mrs Assongba has left a trail of debts, with a former landlord demanding in court more than $10,000 in back rent and damages for a previous apartment. She was also evicted in 2004 after owing $5,000 in rent, records show.

Claiming that defendant had failed to timely make the $3,500 payment in accordance with the terms of the stipulation, plaintiff commenced the instant action seeking to recover the principal sum of $8,750 for arrears due and owing pursuant to the month-to-month lease, and $1,615 for damage to the premises. Plaintiff thereafter moved for summary judgment. The Civil Court denied the motion on the ground that there were issues of fact as to whether defendant had timely complied with the stipulation settling the prior summary proceeding, and this appeal ensued.
