I had an ‘81 Subaru wagon that I drove all over creation as a touring musician.
Best vehicle I ever owned.
The only problem I had was a popped clutch cable which I got at the dealer for $21 and replaced myself in 10 minutes.

I’ve driven one, wanted it for my first car but my dad refused, because an uncle had owned an early one that blew oil. I ended up with a Mustang II.

The television studios were impressed with it and wrote an episode of Bewitched called The Super Car just to get it on camera.
I love a lot of Ford’s new vehicles, but I’ll not buy anything associated with the UAW.

So why did Nader never go after the air-cooled VW Beetle? It had the same push problem as the Corvair. Only difference I can think of is it had half the horsepower and some less weight.

I’m as big a car nut as anybody, but I’m sorry, that thing looks like a pimped out Electrolux. The paintjob is the only nice thing about it. Hideous proportions.
One of my earliest memories of my Dad is of him coming in the house covered with black oil from head to toe after working on his ‘61(?) Corvair. LOL

I agree. The front is awesome but the rear just doesn’t make sense.
I have very vague memories of that uncle having one in the garage, actually I remember two, a coupe and a wagon, both with oil stains on the concrete beneath. He did love them despite their blowing oil. That was resolved with the second and last generation, as I understand.

I’ve always had a soft spot for orphans as far as cars go, the very well considered and lovingly proportioned swan song sort of cars. Late Corvairs, practically any Studebaker hardtop coupe, some AMC designs, step down Hudsons, even imports that had to withdraw like the truly astounding Citroen DS.
I’m glad some people appreciate them, treasure and preserve them. My circumstance has never permitted collecting, but those are the sort of vehicles I’d go for. Bill Mitchell era GM had some stunners, too, as did Virgil Exner era Chrysler.
I did nearly purchase a 72 GS 455 boattail Riviera a few years back, it was a deal, one owner, Sunday go to meeting driven, knew the family. Didn’t have space for it though, so I passed.
