A man who shot and killed another man Wednesday morning in Athens may have been acting in self-defense during a robbery, Athens-Clarke police said.
He told police he shot 23-year-old Travis Sankwon Callaway after Callaway pulled a gun on him outside his home at Pinehurst Apartments off Tallassee Road, according to police.
Police questioned the man after the 3 a.m. shooting and later released him.
Callaway was dead when officers arrived, police said.
Investigators found evidence in the breezeway of 120 Pinehurst Court that appears to support the mans self-defense claim.
He was the shooter and the victim of a robbery, Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman said.
There is the possibility he acted in self-defense, but we are still investigating to make sure that we have everything fully investigated before there are any formal charges on anybody.
The crime scene helps back his claim to a great extent, but we want to be thorough in the investigation before we say its one way or the other, Holeman said.
Detectives still needed to interview more people before they can determine if the homicide was justified, Holeman said late Wednesday afternoon.
Holeman would not disclose the circumstances of the alleged robbery whether Callaway surprised the other man or they had planned to meet.
Callaway has an extensive record of felony arrests and convictions.
He most recently was arrested in September, when members of the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force raided a home on Old Hull Road and found a large amount of cocaine and marijuana, along with prescription drugs, cash, handguns and an assault rifle.
Callaway and two other men each were charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
They were never indicted, however, because the case was taken over by the U.S. Justice Department.
After Callaway was killed, investigators remained on the scene until about 10 a.m., and only minutes later, another gunshot rang out.
A film crew from the University of Georgias Grady School of Journalism heard the shot, as did at least two neighbors one who told officers she heard a car speed away, Athens-Clarke police Lt. Pat Whitmore said.
Officers didnt find evidence that anyone had been shot, Whitmore said, and neither the UGA students nor residents saw a car leaving the scene.
Detectives were looking into the possibility that the shooting was connected to Callaways death, that someone wanted to send a message to the man who killed him, Holeman said.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Athens-Clarke police Detective Jonathan Patterson at (706) 613-3330, extension 555.

Just taking out the trash.
Another son of Obama?
Holder protecting "his people"?
One less Obama voter. The bodies of these criminals are being to pile up and the possibility of voter fraud is going down.
A good deal all around.
It has to be an Obama voter.
I don’t lock my doors to prevent conservatives from busting in.
Neither do liberals, if they are honest about it.
So they think maybe Calloway just died and that bullet hole in him had nothing to do with it?
After Callaway was killed, investigators remained on the scene until about 10 a.m., and only minutes later, another gunshot rang out.
The dead always vote for Democrats.
OK, that makes sense.
Usually in a story like this the term “the shooting” refers to someone being shot. The word “gunfire” should have been used.
Where do they get these “writers?” So many stories are just a collection of sentences that seem to be in a random order with no obvious connection with each other. The really make us work to decipher the stories. It all makes sense to the writer but no one reads it to see if it makes sense to anyone else.
Instead of information being received, the reader is asked to supply conclusions based on racial and ideological feelings. Black antennae are up for a "hate crime." Liberals are free to supply their own "anti-gun" slant. Left-Wing agitprop ... not news. The AP is over as an info source. Unfortunately, AP is still the "feed" for local infotainment TV "news," which is OK on apartment fires but ignores national facts, or god forid, international facts.
This whole Trayvon Martin thing is an excellent example. It was a nothing story until a local TV guy decided that this Zimmerman simply must be a racist, since Martin was a Negro. BTW, he also thought it was his ticket to a Pulitzer. Still might be!
Any bets on the Martin autopsy toxicology? Should have been out a while ago. Ditto, the position of the fatal wound. O, sorry. Must remember to divest discussion points of any factual data.
