Protestors threaten historic Seattle bakery
Kiro 7 News Seatle ^ | April 5, 2012 | Brandi Kruse

A historic Seattle bakery has been targeted by a group of protestors who claim the owner has unfair labor practices. Borracchini's Bakery has been located in the Rainier Valley for nearly 90 years, and owner Remo Borracchini said his customers have become like family. Which is why when he started to get complaints that an employee was being rude to customers, he decided to let her go.

"I said, 'We can't do this anymore, we just can't do this anymore," Borracchini said. "She said, 'You mean I'm fired?' I said, 'Yes, you are.'"

The worker had been with the business for nine years.

But not long after he let the woman go, she showed up at the bakery with a group of more than 50 people. The demonstrators marched inside the small shop, and delivered Borracchini a letter that demanded he pay his former worker $7,901. The letter claimed that the employee was denied breaks as required by law, and therefore entitled to 10 minutes pay for every four hours she worked.

"We hope and expect that this will be done soon, within no more than two weeks," the letter read. "Otherwise, we will take further action."

The group behind the demand is called the Seattle Solidity Network, which is described as a volunteer network that helps people who are "getting kicked around by an employer or landlord." Since their original protest, the group has posted signs about Borracchini's around the neighborhood, and has planned another protest for Saturday.

Borracchini denies the allegations, and said his employees are entitled to "mini-breaks" or "breaks on the fly," which add up to 10 minutes over the course of a four-hour shift. He showed KIRO FM surveillance video of the employee in question taking those breaks.

This is a wonderful business. It’s the last ethnic italian place in a neighborhood that was originally Italian, 100 years ago, but has long since been ghettoized. It has great pastries. Everyone should support this business.

If I still lived there I’d try to do one lunch a week there. It’s where I got my wedding cake from. Love the place.

I notice that they don’t mention the fired worker’s name. WA is a right-to-work state. Too bad for little Miss Disgruntled.

It sounds like Miss Disgruntled is trying to win the lawsuit lottery.

I hope her case is thrown out of court and she and the commie scum at the so-called Seattle Solidarty Network have to pay the bakery’s legal fees.

If anyone lives in the area, go in and buy something, for yourself or treat a friend to some goodies. This family business needs support, to show these liberal dem supporting thugs they can’t get away with.

Sadly, it is cheaper to pay off than to pay lawyers to fight.

And reading the comments you see a few supposed members defending themselves and saying they have proof in the form of letters that the bakery abuses it’s employees. You know what? Pics or it didn’t happen!

Kurtis (from SeaSol)
"Next time you need to use the bathroom, try holding it for four hours, and you will understand what this dispute is about."
The next time you don't work at the communist community farm for four hours you will not have to worry about understanding anything.
